The beauty of middle age is that I remember some of the Nixon reporting better than much of the Clinton reporting.

Generally you don't. Kerry didn't. But sometimes admissions officers will admit on the basis of some especially outstanding life experience.
As for business school, and I don't know what the criteria were in '68, today they value some life experience over grades. A 4 point in mathematics Columbia grad that I know applied to Harvard Business School and they told him to get some real world business experience and then come back. Perhaps W got in for learning to fly that supersonic flying coffin and/or working on political campaigns in Texas and Alabama.
