You may trust DeWine and Graham. "I" do not. I hear two men that experienced heated backlash in fear they could be targeted in a primary challenge. I hear two men that are trying to spin themselves out of retaliation by the constituents they betrayed. IF DeWine and Graham should come around it will not be because it was part of an elaborate strategy. It will be because they are desperate to avoid losing their Senate seats over this pact.
As DG wrote yesterday: "We're winning this battle. We're just not winning it fast enough for the crowd that wants everything wrapped up in 30 minutes including commercials."
Thank you for the insinuation that my opinion of this deal and events is because I have an attention deficit. It couldn't be that I simply loath the Judas pact, I don't ascribe to the idea that victory is defined with the passage of three Justices out of ten and option of the filibuster to arise again. If you disagree with me, fine. Do not ascribe it to need for instant gratification on my part.
But additions of conservative judges to the circuits court is still minor stuff compared to what really is at stake here -- the Supreme Court.
They may not fight us hard regarding Rehnquist's replacement because it won't change the balance of the court. But you can bet your bottom dollar that they want to hold out having the filibuster option should John Paul Stevens retire.
If the nuke option is employed before he retires, then it's inevitable that the Supreme Court will shift decidedly conservative and the liberals will be utterly powerless at the federal level.
They're hoping to pick up Senate seats next year and preserve the filibuster for the real fight.
Bush, and the rest of the GOP, have moved to the center.
BINGO!
I didn't listen to Rush to day, but it's observations and analysis like the above that make him the numer one conservative commentator.
That's "number."
Oh, it's someone's "strategy", it's just bad strategy.
Remember, the Dims see (unnecessary) compromise by Pubs as weakness and capitulation. It will only embolden them more when the next crunch comes. Pub's threats will be seen as hollow bluffs because the Pubs essentially backed down this time in return for getting a few confirmations.
You ever been some place where a parent says "Johnny, if you do that one more time, I'm going to punish you." Then they say it again and again, over and over, and never do anything?
What happens to the kid's behavior each time the threat is made and then not enforced?? Yep, gets worse.
The key point in all of this is one eternal verity: If you are in a position of strength, and then compromise with the Democrats, you have lost.
I agree. The battle for each inch of turf is intense now. Any victory now is precious and more important than most realize. We don't hear the Dims crowing about their strategy; it hurts to have these three in.
