Cool pictures. Belly looks like flak brought her down. I wonder why no prop? I'd be happy to relieve them of the six .50's.

Actually - there is a BF109 and an ME109...
Please feel free to go to:
http://www.skipholm.com/willy-messerschmitt.htm
He's the guy flying this one around the country and - besides being a stud - is quite knowledgeable about the Messerschmitts.

I was just corrected by a WWII pedant here at work that the proper nomenclature is "Bf-109". So shoot me. You might want to tell them that "Bf-109" is the "correct" name, true 109 nuts know that even the Luftwaffe uses the term "Bf-109" and "Me-109" interchangeably in there doc... their even aircraft that had "Me-109" on their data plates
Just FYI the 109 in post 54 is really a post war Spanish built HA-1112 that use a British Rolls-Royce Merlin not a German Daimler-Benz 605
Both Spain and Czechoslovakia built 109 after the war
In a bit of a history twist the first fight aircraft for Israel where Czechoslovakia built 109 "Avia S-199" ...these had German Junkers 211 engines replacing the Daimler-Benz 605 engines

What is that strake right in front of the vertical stabilizer for? I see the one in Post #34 has one, too, but the one they just pulled from the drink did not.
I don't seem to remember that on many of the old pictures. Are those pictures of later models?
BTW, the staggered 50 cals look waaaaay cool. I guess they had to do that to arrange the belt feeds. You can see how the ejector ports were staggered on the underside of the salvaged plane's wings. Man, that plane looks mean.

Yes, "Glacier Girl" is the one recovered. You can see a lot of info on their website.

I'm 50 miles from the old Republic plant in Evansville, waiting for delivery of a coffeetable book from the Evansville Courier that talks about the P-47's and the LST's manufactured in Evansville.
Last year they had a reunion at the Republic plant(now Whirlpool)and the main test pilot now in his 90's got to sit in a Evansville produced P-47.

Dot Matrix? Those eight .50s could probably print about 20 lines a minute!

Thanks for the link... To be honest there a whole gropes of 109 researchers out there and debates over some of the most obscure 109 things have been going on for years (I used to be one)
For one of the best web 109 ref sites over you might want to look at

Nar. It's got nothing on the mountains of NorCal (where I am *grin*). I've got better views than that just travelling about town. Or out the front window, now I think of it. :b

Bewdy. Love to hear stories like that one, especially where the particular aircraft is almost bulletproof. Guess that is why I admire the A-10 Warthog so much.
