But there remain detractors, some in his own party, who argue he has lost touch with the state. And he angered some die-hard conservatives with his support for embryonic stem cell research and the expanded law enforcement powers in the Patriot Act. So it is not surprising that, as Hatch prepares to stand for re-election next year, there is a search - as there was in 2000 - for a dark-horse candidate willing to take on the Goliath.

As the GOP majority in Congress increases and solidifies, you will see the caucus become more conservative, due to primary challenges..
Possible opponents among Republicans are state Representative Steve Urkhardt and businessman Fred Lampropolous.
Hatch has been in D.C. for 30 years. He's served with honor, but he's become too much part of the establishment. He should retire.
Thune took on Daschle - 99 more to go. Replace them all. They have forgotten that they work for the voters not the other way around.
Good. It's way past time this smug little RINO was put out to pasture.
Not to mention his support of the "Dream Act" aka freebies for illegals.
Gotta love the way they like to, by inference, describe all Republican voters. 'Die Hard' appeals to the extremist, fanatically religious, narrow minded, intolerant stereotypes the love perpetuating.
Hear! Hear!
Don't forget old Hatch was the one that gave an ok to the radical aclu head leftist ruth bader ginsberg, he also gave the ok from breyer. Hatch should have forced Clinton to pick a more moderate like that hispanic barerro who hispanics said wasn't liberal enough at the time.
Now the rats say Bush should follow Clinton's lead and pick mainstream candidates that will get the approval of leahy on the judiciary committee just like Hatch gave the approval to Clinton.
But everyone knows that the rats will block a nominee as far to the right as ginsberg and breyer are to the left.
It is an outrage that Hatch gave the ok to these two that have set this country back so many years with there decisions.
He also is the Ted Kennedy kiss ass!
We need to look for candidates for the senate in the model of richard burr or north carolina or demint from south carolina real conservatives not old school arlen spector rino types.
You are exactly right, I don't remember a fuss being put up about these Supreme Court nominees. These two you mention never should have been approved.
I'd be content to have sent him back to Pennsylvania after his gelatin backbone following Columbine. This year won't be soon enough. Is there a constitutional conservative in the ranks able to beat him?
Also he wants to change the Constitution in order to allow non natural born citizens to become President.
He wants his pall Swartzy to become President.
State Representative Steve Urkhardt and medical supplies magnate Fred Lampropolous strike me as being candidates in that mold. Someone from Utah will know more about that than I do.

I guess the definition of honor now includes being the lackey of the Hollywierd cartels, the RIAA and MPAA.
Lampropolous is a good man. I'd vote for him.
I am of the opinion that Hatch has done a very good job.
Nevertheless, I am more than willing to "lose him" via a Term Limits Amendment - a good idea whose time has come again.
Good. I hope they find someone that can strongly challenge him.
It's long overdue. Every candidate should have to fear for their political life when they choose certain courses in Washington. The reality is that many feel secure in the demos of their state if they are of a certain party.
Even if the candidate has a good conservative record competition is the way to go. It will keep the Party connected to its base.
