Well, I'm convinced. Even though the picture was released by Michael Schiavo's lawyers. . .

I wasn't involved in any of the Schaivo discussions here, so I don't know how intense they got, though I heard things were pretty hot.
You know what bothers me about this news, though? It's all the gleeful gloating from some of those folks in the media and medical "ethics" community over this.

Would lawyers have a CT machine of their own, and even if they had - would they know how to operate it? The scan must have been done by MDs, not JDs.

Clinically, a person is brain dead when all of the following conditions are met:
- There are no spontaneous respirations (the person cannot take a single breath on his/her own).
- The pupils are dilated and fixed (the black of the eyes is wide and does not react to light).
- There is no response to noxious stimulation (painful stimulation provokes no eyeblink, no grimacing, no movements of any part of the body).
- All extremities are flaccid (there is no movement, no muscle tone and no reflex activity in any of the limbs - arms or legs).
- There are no signs of brain stem activity:
- The eyeballs are fixed in the orbits.
- There are no corneal reflexes (stroking the clear part of the eye with a fine wisp of cotton fails to produce any movement of the eyelids).
- There is no response to caloric testing (exposing the tympanic membrane of the ear to ice cold water fails to produce movement of the eyes).
- There is no gag reflex or cough reflex.

The reason I posted this is that she was not brain dead, by any medical definition.

Lots of these kinds of stories coming out the last couple of days, with ABC radio news (for one) headlining with Schiavo revelations all day yesterday. I think it pretty obvious what the media is up to.

Interesting the part of the brain that kept signaling breath was still functioning.

"DURBAN COMMENTS CONFIRM BRAIN DEATH"
Let's remove his "feeding tube".

I'm not commenting on that either way.
I'm just noting the indecent joy with which the purported conclusions of the ME were greeted....by the usual pro-death (except for convicted murderers) types.

Thank you and a huge BUMP!!!!
Amazing the moderate nobles are still using the cover, this was done legally and under the LAW!

" "DURBAN COMMENTS CONFIRM BRAIN DEATH"
Let's remove his "feeding tube"."
You are much braver than me, as Moooola Durbin's speech does amazingly cross threads with the legal supporters of what was legally done to Terri.
Moooola Durbin was in complete favor of pulling the feeding tubes on Terri, it was ordered by a judge and was alllll legal. Yet this same mind claims that collecting enemy combatants off the world's battle fields and interrogating them to protect his sorry behind is same as what Nazi's and Stalin did to multiple millions.
To: dead
You're absolutely correct that Terri was not "brain dead"
When oh when oh when are people going to learn the difference between "brain death" and "brain injury" ??
If Terri truly had been brain dead, it would have been easily diagnosed, and there never would have been any controversy.
She would have been on a ventilator - and that would have been removed.
To: dead
Brain death and PVS (persistent vegetative state) are two different diagnoses.
These autopsy results do not demonstrate brain death. They may demonstrate PVS, or they may not, depending on which expert you talk to.
The foremost expert on the matter at Johns Hopkins says it's inconclusive and suggested that it would have been more useful for Mr. Schiavo to have permitted experts to run a battery of exams on Terri Schiavo while she was alive.

Felos knows how to operate. Kervorkian's in jail. Schiavo, Greer and Felos are free. Did you Kervorkian got his start when he "assisted" one of his wives? In the woods, the two of them alone. He walked out, she didn't. (As I best recollect.)
Now Terri and Mike walked into the Pines. Pineas County. He walked out, she was converted to oxide dust.

Unless they were trying to pass somebody's else scan or a picture from a textbook, I would have to believe even Felos that 2x2=4. You are free to disagree.

Many a man has lived after a gunshot to the head, recorded cases of brain impalment, removal of large portions -- yet the subject was still alive, conscious, responsive and functional. Loss of large parts of brain do NOT mean death or brain death.
