Almost lost in the welter of initiatives from well-heeled interests and the epic tussle between the governor and the Legislature is a grassroots initiative that could make some modest and obvious reforms that could improve the integrity of the voting process. It deserves attention.
Laguna Niguel attorney Robert Ming wrote the Voter ID Act after a worker at a polling place last year told him, We cant look at that, when he pulled out his drivers license to identify himself. He thought that was a bit goofy and discovered that several bills to require identification at polling places had died in committee in recent years, so he wrote the initiative and filed it with the proper authorities.
The Voter ID Act is short and simple. It would require that voters present one of four types of picture identification before voting: (1) California drivers license; (2) California Department of Motor Vehicles-issued identification card; (3) military identification card, or (4) United States passport. It would allow those who cant furnish ID to vote provisionally, subject to showing an ID later.

Now, with a deadline of Aug. 8 to collect 373,000 signatures to qualify for next Junes ballot, he thinks theres a chance, especially if a donor or two steps up to the plate (www.voteridact.com).

True enough. This initiative deserves a closer look, given the common use of photo IDs today and disenfranchisement of a different kind the vote that is diminished through fraud.

Thanks for the information. I'll get some of those petitions signed for sure! There's NO reason that non-Americans should be deciding our elections here in California, and we've put up with it long enough!
