Study: A Quarter of U.S. Illegal Immigrants Attended College (Brain drain concerns Mexico)

Study: Illegal Immigrants Attended College

A groundbreaking study has enhanced the profile of the undocumented Hispanic immigrant to the United States, showing that a quarter of those without a visa or Green Card have at least some college education.

"Not all of the unauthorized population fits the stereotype of a poorly educated manual laborer," said demographer Jeffrey S. Passel, who prepared the study "Unauthorized Migrants: Numbers and Characteristics," released Tuesday by the Pew Hispanic Center.

The document establishes that, overall, undocumented immigrants have less formal education than the rest of the U.S. population.

Some 49 percent did not finish high school, compared with only 9 percent of the native-born U.S. population, the study concluded.

But it also points out that half did finish, and that half of those, a quarter of the total, have at least some college education.

A conclusion of the report is that the educational level of recent undocumented immigrants is higher than that of illegal immigrants in the country for more than 10 years.

Whereas 56 percent of recent immigrants finished high school, only 45 percent of longtime immigrants did so.

The so-called brain drain is one concern of the Mexican government, as some one million college-educated Mexicans now live abroad.

Geronimo Gutierrez, Mexico's top diplomat for relations with the United States and Canada, recently took part in a series of informative sessions under the auspices of the World Bank with the goal of setting up a network of Mexican talent abroad.

"Mexico's development is the responsibility of all Mexicans, and we won't reach our full potential if we don't involve the talent of Mexicans who live abroad," Gutierrez said at one of the sessions.

The Pew Hispanic Center's report underscores that the undocumented come to the United States to work. Among adult men, 92 percent are in the workforce, whereas 83 percent of the U.S.-born are.

Besides performing manual labor in agriculture and construction, the undocumented population is present in many industries, even though since 1986 it has been illegal to hire an illegal immigrant.

The report says at least 6.3 million undocumented workers were employed in March 2004, representing 4.3 percent of the civilian work force.

While 3 percent of the undocumented work in agriculture, 33 percent work in a service industry.

The incomes of illegal workers are low, however, compared with those of legal immigrants and the native-born, but rise the longer a worker has been in the country.

In 2003, the average household income of a family of undocumented immigrants with fewer than 10 years in the country was $25,700, and $29,900 in the case of those here longer than that.

Also in 2003, the average income of a family of legal immigrants was significantly higher - $47,800 - compared with $47,700 in the case of U.S.-born families. EFE

The "brain drain" on Mexico is lowering the IQ of both countries.

(Brain drain concerns Mexico)

Not enough, evidently.

(The tens of billion$ they receive in remittances might have something to do with that).

I have the privilege of personal contact with illegals with an interpreter on a regular basis.

I am here to tell you that if the illegals I talk to represent a brain drain to Mexico, Mexico is in sorry sorry shape.

I'd pretty much assumed this all along.

For good or bad, it takes a motivated person to sneak into the US.  Often, motivated people better themselves.

To better the problems of Mexico, seal the border and watch the motivated people revolt.

This is so pathetic. First they tell us that they are only here to do the jobs Americans won't. Now, they want us to believe that a quarter of them have some college. Well, are they saying then that college educated mexicans are here to clean toilets, mow lawns and pluck chickens?

Either they can't keep their lies straight or they think we are utterly stupid and have been fully subjugated.

You see Soros and Pew wish to have us pay and take responsibility for rebuilding Mexico. Can't do that with closed borders..

Those "college attendees" from Mexico must have all gone to some other state! The ones coming to California are illiterate, even in their own language, though they all seem to know where to get the fraudulent documents and collect all the freebies, including free medical care.

Children of illegal aliens have drastically lowered the standards in California schools. It's a sad situation here, with no hope of any help in the way of illegal immigration law enforcement from our "leaders".

Mr. Mojo, I think you hit the nail smack dab on the head. If you can send your poor to another country and then receive billion of dollars to spike your economy why would you want to help the US to protect it's borders?

If the border is going to get closed so we can get a handle on the illegal alien problem it will have to be done by the US.

Those illegals where I work are pretty screwed up, too. They all act like they are literate and can actually do my job. ( I am an industrial electrician) They can't speak English or just a little but they all act as though they can understand what I am doing when I troubleshoot a problem.

We even had a guy come in on an interview for a mechanic's job and the human resources retard had to translate for the supervisor. The supervisor told them flat out that they have to be fluent in English. Of course, he's willing to work for $10/hr while a good mechanic will demand at the least $16.

The HR retard almost demanded that we hire him. Why? He's got an impressive resume. Everything on it is from somewhere in South America. No way to verify any of it. Does the resume just match the name that he's using? Can't tell.

It's getting really disgusting out there.
