Desert Fire Threatens Hundreds Of Homes
A Voluntary Evacuation Has Been Called
Jun 22, 2005 4:15 pm US/Pacific
MORONGO VALLEY, Calif. (AP) The number of acres burned in the Morongo Valley fire has increased to 1,100 acres. At least seven homes have burned, and 200 others are threatened. A structure fire that got out of control has been pinpointed as the source of the blaze. Temperatures have passed 100 degrees.
The fire erupted about 1 p.m. and is burning on both sides of Highway 62 in heavy grass.
The fire is burning east and south into a habitated area.
About 200 homes are immediately threatened. As many as 700 homes are in the fire's path as it moves toward the Joshua Tree National Park.
A voluntary evacuation has been called.
A firefighter has suffered a knee injury.
The community consists of about two-thousand scattered ranches and homes on large lots.
The fire has moved within feet of some buildings.
About 20 engine companies are fighting the fast-moving flames that are feeding on two-foot-high grass in temperatures of more than 100 degrees. Winds are clocked at 22 miles an hour.
The wind today isn't going to help matters. I hate fire season out here.
9 homes lost per KNBC, 200 in the path of the flames...
Thanks - I'm watching now. What a mess.
Thanks for the ping. I just got home. Still out of control in Morongo Valley?
headed north into the national park
what happened to that Lancaster brushfire?
