Seizing on public embarrassment as a deterrent, the Chicago Police Department has begun posting on its website the names, addresses and photos of people arrested for soliciting prostitutes.
"We're telling everyone who sets foot in Chicago, if you solicit a prostitute, you'll be arrested," Mayor Richard Daley said.
"And when you are arrested, people will know. Your spouse, your children, your families, your neighbours and your employers."
Some newspapers already print the names of those arrested for soliciting sex for money.
Cities have tried broadcasting mug shots on community access TV channels.
And in Oakland, California, officials began a "shaming campaign" this year in which they posted billboards with photos of men convicted of soliciting sex.
The Chicago website was already filled on Tuesday afternoon with the pictures of 20 people arrested in the past month.
Officials are also distributing posters warning potential customers about the site. Besides the website postings, convicted "johns" face fines of about $US1,000 ($A1,285) in Chicago, plus the impoundment of their cars.
Judges can also order jail time for repeat offenders.
Last year, police in Chicago, the third-largest US city, arrested 3,204 people on prostitution charges and 950 on charges involving solicitation.
Officials estimate that more than 16,000 women are involved in prostitution in Chicago over the course of a year.
Meet Mr Peppers.
Those are interesting links you posted. Mr. Peppers is obviously not a real human being ... LOL gross sexual imposition LOL ... and the chick in the series photos on the prostitute link actually looks like a series of photos taken of a daycare worker throughout the day.
One would think Chicago has enough violent crime that they shouldn't waste their resources on who is trying to get laid.
LOL
Come on now, try and think like, say, Saddam Hussein did and attain that it is better to exececute 50 innocent people than let the guilty party off scott free.
Some questions for Chicago's leaders: Is there any website where pictures of corrupt Chicago politicians are posted? Is there a site where we can see pictures of people who were arrested only to be found NOT GUILTY in a courtroom? Is there a site where pictures are posted of police officers who haven taken bribes or have entrapped citizens wrongfully. Just wonderin'.
If a man in Chicago gives his feuding girlfriend a diamond bracelet and then she gives him the night of his life back at her apartment, are police going to post the guy's picture on the internet?
I'll stand by the "prostitute" as daycare worker statement, but apparently Mr. Peppers is real. ... Snopes has pics of him as a child. How unfortunate.
It'd be funny if some struggling musician were to actually go out and intentionally get caught paying for sex just for the publicity!
Case in point: Prostitution is generally cheaper.
Didn't Richard Daley stand by his man (Bill Clinton) during the impeachment scandal? What's the deal with that? It's OK to lie under oath, it's OK to get others to lie, it's OK to obstruct justice, it's OK to grope Kathleen Willey, it's OK to rape Juanita Broaddrick, it's OK to deny Paula Jones her day in court even after she wins a 9-0 ruling from the Supreme Court... but it's not OK for a factory worker to pay a girl 20 bucks for a BJ after work? Talk about hypocrisy.
Liberlism 101...........rules are only for the little people.
I would be more interested in seeing the prostitutes pictures, addresses and names.
"Alleged prostitute-users posted on Net"
GOOD.
Still looking for the Chicago list.
Don't forget turn-ons and turn-offs.
we need pics!
Peppers would have to be an offender, cuz no woman is going to give it to him willingly.
I would be interested to know by what appendage he was held in place while this picture was taken, because the look on his face suggests it may have been his third leg.
