Farmingville flophouse landlord arrested

Suffolk police yesterday arrested the owner of a rundown 900-square-foot house in Farmingville that has been home to as many as 64 Hispanic immigrants at a time, each paying $200 to $250 a month in rent.

Rosalina Dias, 31, of Selden, was charged with criminal contempt and criminal nuisance for allegedly violating an October court order barring her from renting the single-family house. Although officials said it was highly unusual to arrest a landlord, they took the action because of her "outrageous and total disregard for court orders," said Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy.

Calls to Dias' home, business and attorney were not returned.

Paul Palmieri, president of a landlord advocacy group, said Dias "is denying the allegations. Our opinion is that they're trying to rid Farmingville of all the Mexicans."

Suffolk police and Brook.haven Town investigators who searched the single-story house at 33 Woodmont Place early Sunday found 44 mattresses. Electrical wires hung from gaping holes in the ceiling, and dirt and grease caked the walls. In the basement, they found a propane gas tank next to exposed electrical wires. Next to one of the beds was a lit religious candle under a picture of Jesus.

One tenant, Alberto Martinez, 18, of Mexico City, said he had lived in the house only a month. Asked to describe the conditions, he grimaced and said in Spanish, "Ugly."

"They used every square inch of space to squeeze in more clients," said Suffolk Deputy Inspector Douglas Rilling. "It's a house that was built for a family with a couple of kids."

This is becoming a huge problem on Long Island. The homeowners in Farmingville have been complaining for years. Every morning, you can drive past any main corner or 7-11 and see hundreds of illegals lined up waiting for some landscaper or construction business owner to hire them for the day.

I know that now it has become fairly common for even individual homeowners to hire them for various jobs around the home.

So 60 people @ $200 per month = $12,000 per month. Unless they fine the landlord enough to really hurt, or put the landlord in jail, people will continue to do this. Earning the purchase price of the house back in one or two years is going to be just too tempting.

What they should do is charge her for aiding and abetting criminals (illegal aliens), but they won't because they would have to charge too many others as well.

It isn't just a problem on Long Island. When I lived in Stamford, CT, you could see crowds of Portuguese illegals waiting to be picked up by landscapers each morning.

A few other quotes:

It is one of 117 illegal boarding houses in Farmingville under investigation

such "flophouses" have proliferated because enforcement had failed

With the help of Palmieri's group, the not-for-profit Coalition of Landlords, Homeowners and Merchants, Dias argued that the town had made a technical error because one page was missing from its legal papers. Suffolk Supreme Court Justice William Underwood dismissed the town's case.

That last was from one of many previous court cases, after the mob living there started a fire, authorities counted 58 people heading out one morning, and Dias blew off a prior court order. She claims for tax and mortgage purposes the single family home is owner occupied, but she takes in over $9k a month from the property, and the article describes the house she herself lives in, by ripping off these illegals.

But hey, as long as you're doing your best to tear society down, there's some "nonprofit" group of lawyers out there handing you the tools, and some slimebag of a judge like Underwood looking for loopholes to let you skate. (By the way, "nonprofit" means the group doesn't make money as a group -- the individual lawyers take it all! It's a scam).

by ripping off these illegals

As a landlord myself I find this woman's actions reprehensible and I hope they throw the book at her, but the very notion of "ripping off these illegals" is an oxymoron.

An illegal immigrant is by its very nature a CRIMINAL... Where was INS to round up these 60 guys and send em back home?

Agreed. But surely the actions of the landlord are more morally reprehensible than those of the illegals. I don't really have any anger or outrage toward illegals who are just looking for a way to earn money to feed their families and make a better life. I'm sure my husband would do the same for our family if we were in that situation. I don't know what the solution is, barring erecting a huge wall on the Mexican border until the Mexican government does something to help its own people.

Sorry, I do not have empathy for illegals, I've seen the damage they do when they show up... this.. they are just like everyone else looking for opportunity is bunk.

Some are yes, but don't buy into that stuff.. The minute you see illegals showing up, your neighborhood and safety are in decline... that's the non PC truth.

Just another one... when I was in Cali the illegals were harrassing 4th to 6th grade girls walking home from school daily....

Well, we have 60 guys time 117 flophouse... and that's just in this one Long Island burg, so it's times however many such little burgs there are...

And sure, they are criminals. But this slumlord is a major level of criminal herself, because she's enabling dozens of these characters...

In LA, 95% of outstanding felony warrants are for (ahem) "undocumented workers," as the libs and the WSJ profiteers call 'em.
