WASHINGTON (AP) -- Under criticism over inadequate security for federal judges, the director of the U.S. Marshals Service announced his resignation Friday.Benigno Reyna has led the Marshals Service, which is responsible for protecting judges and rounding up fugitives, since October 2001. His resignation is effective July 31, Marshals Service spokesman Don Hines said.
Hines said Reyna, previously police chief in Brownsville, Texas, decided it was time to go back home.
But federal judges have been unusually vocal in criticizing the Marshals Service following the Feb. 28 fatal shootings of the husband and mother of U.S. District Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow at her Chicago home.
"Director Reyna's tenure was hampered by a perennial lack of resources that affected the services' ability to carry out its primary mission, protecting the federal judiciary," said Dick Carelli, spokesman for the federal courts.
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales ordered a review of judges' protection in March. Gonzales praised Reyna Friday for leading the service after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks and overseeing the reorganization of the Marshals Service headquarters.
These pious creeps should have to live in the world like the rest of us!
And I, a US citizen, have been hampered by numerous bone-headed decisions and out right "ignoring the law" examples from the federal courts.
With all due respect (not much for some of you clowns), if you are that worried about your own safety - buy a gun, then take a safety course.
No disrespect to the loss of life in this case.
