The power of Presidential solidarity - (Bush, 1st Pres in decades to inspire the world w. liberty)
JEWISH WORLD REVIEW.COM ^ | JUNE 24, 2005 | JEFFJACOBY

"A reader living in Moscow," writes National Review's Jay Nordlinger, "sent me a photo from a rally in Azerbaijan, which showed a youth holding up a poster of President Bush with the words, 'We Want Freedom.' The reader commented, 'It's good to remember whom people turn to when they're desperate — and it ain't Kofi Annan."'

Indeed. It is fashionable in some circles to invoke the United Nations as the touchstone of moral authority, but realists know better. They look to the United States, not the UN, as the great moral engine in world affairs. Like the Lebanese who waved a US flag during the demonstrations in Beirut earlier this year, like the "Goddess of Liberty" in Tiananmen Square in 1989, the young Azerbaijani with his poster is a reminder that America and its message of freedom and individual dignity have an almost limitless capacity to inspire those who are denied them.

In his recent bestseller, "The Case for Democracy," former Soviet refusenik Natan Sharansky recalled how Ronald Reagan's "evil empire" speech electrified prisoners deep inside the Soviet gulag:

Compared to the policies of his predecessors, Bush's promotion of democracy as a matter of national security, his blunt talk about dictatorships, and the honor he shows dissidents are revolutionary. Think of Gerald Ford in 1975, refusing to meet with the Soviet writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn for fear of irritating Moscow. Or of Jimmy Carter in 1979, kissing Leonid Brezhnev on both cheeks and praising the shah of Iran as "deeply concerned about human rights."

Thanks! I have seen that picture and wish now that I had saved it to post! It made me proud that we have a leader like George W. Bush that puts doing the right thing above listening to his critics! God bless him and God be with the people around the world yearning to be free!

Only if we can get the Supreme Court on board. How about separation of school and state, Mr President?

LOVE the photo AND our 'cowboy' president!!!

[I take great pleasure in knowing that the photo (and the article) will irritate FR's 'permanent pucker' crowd -- two of whom have already posted on this thread!]

There is something that is very predictable when we see an article like this one posted here on FR. We see the same usual suspects doing their best to turn the thread into a Border thread, or some other diversion from the point of this positive article.

It's not like there isn't dozens of threads for them to belly ache on, that directly addresses their view that the cup is half empty and before Bush, we never had a border problem or Bush hasn't spoke out against something he has no power to reverse.

Isn't there a famous prayer called "Serenity" that answers why Bush hasn't spoke out about the recent SCOTUS decision?

He's truly a man for the ages .. the history books (those that aren't into revisionism) will resound with his bold accomplishments and convictions.

President Bush is fighting battles on so many levels. I don't think any of us will understand just how many until years after his terms.

Every once in awhile, a man comes along who is significant. President Bush is one.

He Inspires me, are you saying that I am not in the US?

He has Inspired me from his announcement to run for President.

I am not Inspired by mizmoutarde (Whoever you are) and whatever your qualifications are for criticizing the Leader of the Free World, President of the United States, Leader of the Republican Party, former Governor of the Great State of Texas are unapparent in your post. At bare minimum could you provide possibly the High School that you Graduated from and the year?

"Separation of School and State"

That is excellent! Where have I been?
Getting the Government out of the Education Business has been one of my top concerns and issues for years.

That would make a great bumper sticker!
