That was an interesting article. I have reached a different conclusion, though. My contention is that the pillar of cloud by day and pillar of fire by night referred to in the exodus is the massive volcano which destroyed Thebes and is now the islands of Santorini.
They could follow that sign to Canaan if they started from Iraq or Saudi Arabia.
