They are among the most maligned groups in society, but when it comes to discrimination, many say, gays can give as good as they get.
A city investigation of S.F. Badlands, one of the largest and most popular bars in the heart of the Castro neighborhood, has added evidence to that argument. In April, the San Francisco Human Rights Commission found that the bar discriminated against African American customers and job applicants.
That finding, which is vigorously disputed by the bar's owner, is elevating the murmurs of racism in the gay community to a national discussion. National gay media have followed the controversy, and comedian Margaret Cho blogged about the bar -- and racism -- after a tour stop in San Francisco.
Protesters have picketed the bar every week for the past eight weeks, turning a Saturday night into an ethical quandary for patrons. The leading national scholar of racism among gay men calls the situation a catalyst.
"People have discussed racism in the community for a long time, but to have such sustained public demonstrations out in the street in the very central part of the Castro -- it's a new moment in the history of the community," said Niels Teunis, an anthropologist and assistant professor of human sexuality studies at San Francisco State University.

This is outreach to the black community. May God help them to stand stong, be wise, and not fall for the deception before them.
And here I had been led to believe that 'fudge' was color blind.
I have trouble getting past the headline
"Gays On The Receiving End..."
The bar expected applicants to push in customers' stools.
And "give as good as they get".
LOL. Missed that!
I used to have a job where I reviewed decisions about why people left their jobs. For every gay being harrassed off the job, there were five straights harrassed off the job by gays.
Shame on you, Poking fun at them..lol
This is a lie worthy of Dan Rather.
Barbershops? Barbershops?!!! I feel so old and out of it! Talk about niche marketing...
"In the gay community, you have to have a sexual preference, and that makes it more difficult to talk about race and racism," Teunis said. "Sure it's slightly bothersome, but to suggest an individual is racist because he doesn't have a preference for someone, I don't think that's valid," Fang said.
Hmmmmmm....I thought sexuality was biologically determined and that preferences played no role?
Very degrading...oh, those stools!
They are starting their own news station called Al Ja Que..z
The link to how gays work can be found in the early deaths in AIDS. A small circle of Queens passed out jobs for sexual favors and in return they filled Boadway, 7th Ave. and Hollywood with more Queens than can be imagined and kept out any straight person. Then they started dying. Nobody mentioned how they exclude others, all they said was, "Look who we lost." If anyone every did a true study on harassment all the enterainment industry would lose hundreds of millions of dollars.
"Gays on receiving end.." That can't be a coincidental use of the language.
I'm confused here.I thought that the drive for "homosexual rights" was based on exactly the same moral grounds as was the civil rights movement. But now we find that these enlightened souls don't seem to like the "darkies".
Another thing occurred to me....has anybody checked out
DUmmieLand to see what mention is made of this story?
