Blair's son to work for controversial Republican
Scotsman, UK ^ | 6/27/05 | GERRI PEEV

THE Prime Minister's son, Euan Blair, has beaten around 100,000 hopefuls to secure an internship with a Republican congressman who is accused by gay rights campaigners of leading a double life.

Euan is to work for David Dreier on Capitol Hill in Washington.

The coveted intern posts often go to the most academically gifted, but connections are equally important. For a foreigner to be given an internship is highly unusual as the roles often go to graduates from the congressman's local district.

Euan, an ancient history graduate of Bristol University, has expressed an interest in entering politics and was a keen observer of the general election.

Downing Street confirmed the British embassy was involved in setting up the internship "for obvious security reasons".

Although Mr Blair is known for his strong relationship with President George Bush, the appointment raised eyebrows among Democrats.

Eric Burns, a spokesman for Democrat congresswoman Louise Slaughter, told a Sunday newspaper that the Washington rules committee, chaired by Mr Dreier, was one of the most partisan.

He said: "It is extremely surprising that the son of a Labour prime minister would intern with the Republican majority staff on the committee."

Mr Dreier, who will be the 21-year-old's mentor during his internship, has been accused of hypocrisy for opposing legislation to stop discrimination against gay couples when questions have been asked about his personal life.

He is believed to live with his male chief of staff and has refused to comment on his sexuality.

However, campaigners have accused him of double standards, pointing to his voting record in which he has opposed legislation to ban discrimination against gay people in employment and supported a ban on gay and lesbian couples adopting in the district of Columbia, as well as rejecting hate-crimes legislation intended to protect gays.

Mr Dreier, a Christian Scientist, also introduced a controversial bill for all workers to be forced to carry "fraud-resistant" social security cards that would include photos and encrypted magnetic strips - similar to UK proposals for ID cards.

Downing Street refused to comment on "any individuals" who might be associated with Euan's unpaid three-month internship but a spokesman said he would also go on to work for a Democratic party congressman.

Although internships are highly sought-after, the young apprentices often lead a far from glamorous existence. Their duties include photocopying, going to pick up dry- cleaning and answering phones.

Leave it to the Democrats to use sexual preference as a smear tactic. Dreier obviously got himself elected without having to have a bunch of laws passed.

According to the MSM every Republican is controversial, except for McCain.

I like Dreier.

What a low smearing tactic to include innuendoes.

So Tony Blair, the head of Labor, doesn't think the Democrats offer the potential in education for his son that the Republicans do (something I find hysterically funny as I imagine the blood drain from Democrats' faces)...so these people go after Dreier's alledged sexuality?

Reminds me of Kerry attacking Cheney's daughter in a national debate.

No Class. No soul. No conscience.

I like him too. This is a UK publication (relatively Conservative) and reflects very mildly against Tony Blair.

Story won't get much MSM attention because of possible negative reflection on Blair. These rumors have been around for years and MSM will continue to yawn.

His orientation is nobody else's business. At least he's not in your face with it.

Too bad, though. He's absolutely a gorgeous man.

Let's see, now... Barney Frank is gay, that's good. David Dreier might be gay, that's somehow bad. Liberals need to get their beliefs straight (no pun intended) Either it's OK to be gay or it isn't...

If it makes Louise Slaughter upset then whatever happened must be a good thing.

"It is extremely surprising that the son of a Labour prime minister would intern with the Republican majority staff on the committee."

Why would he want to intern with a bunch of losers like the Democrats?

I'm not familiar with David Dreier. Is he a RINO? That could answer a lot of questions (that are in my head).

If it is not common for foreigners to get an intern, I'm wondering if this is a setup to pit Blair against Bush.

I'm not at all up to date on David Dreier. Can you offer insight?
