EDWARD K. BRAXTON was installed as the Roman Catholic bishop of Belleville last week, and I think the good folks of Belleville are in for a treat.
His appointment has not been without controversy. In fact, more than 75 percent of Belleville's active diocesan priests signed a letter to Cardinal Francis George of Chicago expressing their displeasure at the process by which Braxton was appointed. I know nothing about that. A lot of folks have also expressed dismay at Braxton's request for diocesan money to renovate the bishop's residence. That request was, I'll admit, a bit awkward. The rule of thumb for priests is this: Spend money first on your church, second on your school and only then on the rectory. Still, I think Bishop Braxton will be fine.
My only contact with him came seven years ago. My daughter, then 14, was being confirmed at St. Francis Xavier Church, which is at Grand and Lindell boulevards and is most commonly known as College Church.
Years earlier, when my wife had decided the kids needed some kind of religious instruction, she asked me if I had any thoughts on the subject. I suggested something middle of the road. Perhaps we could send them to a Methodist church. Maybe even a Unitarian establishment - Church of the Burning Question.

Why not the Metropolitan Community parish, Church of the Charred Gerbil?
You weren't the only one cheated. Kids who are being confirmed should know something about the patron Saint of their own parish, and they should certainly know what a bishop is. Dolan, of course, gladly dumbs them down. Braxton isn't really that conservative, but it's the same story as in politics: Call a liberal a moderate, and a moderate a conservative, until the scale "shifts left", and a real conservative is called a reactionary, or worse.
Posts on FR in May pointed to the manner in which the Bishop was selected by the Pope without any input from the Priests in the Diocese or some of the Diocese's officers.
These Novus Ordo socialist are finding out that this Pope, Pope Benedict XVI is IN CHARGE, and they are not. More moves by the man who was at Vatican II and will make the changes necessary to bring about Vatican II's true intentions. Another Chess piece is moved into place!
Thanks for the Post!!
Yes. Braxton's installation featured the following:
The congregation was still standing as nine members of the Althoff Catholic High School Praise Dancers, barefoot and dressed in blue cassocks, entered the nave with a book of the Gospels and a bowl of incense. They danced down the center aisle as a gospel chorus, backed up by a set of drums, sang an up-tempo version of "Alleluia."
Actually, Braxton was placed in Belleville by John Paul II, back in February.

Liturgical dancers, and check out the pectoral cross he is wearing for the portrait on his diocese's website.
I've recounted this many times, but he claimed in a homily I heard at the Cathedral in StL as a new auxiliary bishop, to be Bernardin's great protege. The Cardinal gave him his ring as he was dying of cancer, he said. Passing the torch, as it were. Funny we don't hear much about that anymore....
Braxton isn't really that conservative

I agree. It's so fascinating though, that the liberal contingent thinks he is.
More of a procession than "liturgical dancers," perhaps?
If there was ever a reason more blatent that it's time for Bill McClellan to retire....
They had their kids confirmed at St. X? The Cathedral is the next church - of any sort - west on Lindell and they go to the wreckovated cradle of Jesuit folk music for confirmation? Somehow that doesn't surpeise me coming from him, after all, he is a Cubs fan.
Given the way things work around here with the "parishes without boundries" and St. Francis Xavier in particular, I doubt that St. X is their parish. I'm pretty sure McClellan lives somewhere in the county, and St. X is in midtown.
Maybe, but I wouldn't wish braxton on my worst enemy. Regardless of whether he is liberal or conservative, the man is an a**. The fact that he is a Bernardin protogee is scary enough, but Braxton is honestly a pompous a**.
Agreed. We lived in Webster Groves for several years and I'm pretty sure Mr. Mc Clellan did, too.
As for the parishes without boundaries, I think there were quite a few liberal Websterites that travelled to other churches...St. Francis Xavier, and St. Cronan was (is)another one.
I had a neighbor, her husband and daughter travelled to St. Francis X. every Sunday, the child took PSR there. The woman was into liturgical dance....

And the choice of the (Kumbaya) College church (St. Francis X.) was no accident, I'm sure, though it may have been made by his spouse since she's the one who's Catholic.
"As I come to meet you, I will meet you as you are, unconstrained by idle talk and speculation."
In other words, "Don't ask me any awkward questions."
