U.S. Had 170 Recon Flights over N. Korea in June
KCNA, Pyongyang (via Yonhap News)
2005/06/30
N. Korean news agency KCNA claimed on June 30 that the number of U.S. reconnaissance flights over N. Korea in June amounts to 170.
Quoting military sources, KCNA denounced, "Although many threads of dialogues between the North and the South(Korea) are in progress, with exchange and cooperation picking up, American imperialists are viciously redoubling reconnaissance flights against our republic(note:N. Korea.)
It continues, claiming, "Various kind of tactical and strategic reconnaissance aircrafts which took off from American airbase in S. Korea or outside were involved in surveillance activities. They are 'E-3' command aircraft, 'U-2' high-altitude reconnaissance plane, 'RC-135' strategic reconnaissance plane, 'EP-3' electronic reconnaissance plane."
N. Korea is publicizing the frequency of monthly American reconnaissance flights, maintaining that there were 180 flights in Jan., 190 in Feb., 200 in Mar., 170 in Apr., 180 in May of this year respectively.

So the number of monthly recon flights in this year is between 170 and 200. Is this significantly above average?

Those planes were probably having navigation problems.

I suspect you put the ping-list at the wrong place. You may have to ping them again.

I doubt we flew E-3s or RC-135s over N. Korea. Even U2s can be shot down by modern SAMs. The only thing that could safely overfly N. Korea is an SR-71 (unless we've built an "Aurora" type critter...). So, since we're flyin' in international airspace, they'll have to get over it.

Am I mistaken, or did I read on here that an SR-71 was downed a week ago somewhere over Asia?
To: TigerLikesRooster
Those flights were in fact not "over" NK but near it in international air space.
The actual overflights they wouldn't know about.

Re #14
That was U-2 in Pakistan or Afghanistan, I think.
To: VA_Gentleman
A U-2 (more likely a TR-1,) crashed while landing last week in the middle East after a mission over Afragistan. It was not "downed" it crashed.

Nope. It was a U2, and I think it crashed on landing or take off, or something.
