PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President Bush is spending the weekend at Camp David. He will travel to Morganstown, West Virginia, on Monday to participate in 4th of July celebrations there. The First Lady has been away from Washington recently. However, she will be traveling with the President to Europe this coming week. Our beloved Dubya will mark his 59th birthday on July 6. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MR. PRESIDENT! And a rousing HAPPY 229TH BIRTHDAY to our great nation.

US First Lady Laura Bush will visit Tanzania later this month.

She will travel to Tanzania during her trip to Africa to highlight the role of women and fighting Aids.

"Next month, Laura will travel to South Africa, Tanzania and Rwanda to highlight the partnership we're building on education, the empowerment of women and the fight against HIV/Aids," President George W. Bush said in Washington yesterday in a speech on the Group of Eight summit next week, where aid to Africa will be high on the agenda.

Miss. students make quilt for Laura Bush
Tuesday, June 28, 2005 1:28 PM CDT

ST. MARTIN (AP) - Some Gulf Coast (Mississippi) fifth-graders are sending First Lady Laura Bush a queen-sized quilt in July.

The students from the gifted-education program at St. Martin Upper Elementary School helped produce the quilt through the Winning Instruction for Neat Gifted Students program. It is one of three quilts made based on two years of study about the American education system. The project started when students were in the fourth grade.

The quilt was sewn by Ellen Dixon of Ocean Springs.

Gifted-education teachers Loretta Wright and Sue Nicholson will present the quilt to U.S. Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., on July 7. Lott will deliver the quilt to Bush.

Wright said students started the project during fourth grade.

"The children didn't sew the quilt, but they made the squares," Wright said. "The quilt has about 28 squares where they wrote a poem about a subject or area in education science, math, history, folk art, or break time, cafeteria, sports, anything and everything about education."

The students used those studies to determine square sizes, drawings and other features. The students added their signatures once the poems were written on the squares

"I thought it was very good and fun because it's teaching us a lesson about appreciating what we have," said Brittany Cox, 11.

Kyle Murphy, 10, wrote a poem about sports.

"It was a lot of fun. I learned a lot from it. I learned how to write poetry, and the history of the school system of America. We learned how to work together as a group."

In the meantime, while our President, First Lady, and our wonderful Armed Forces do everything they can for this great nation, the Hollywood Left never rests in its anti-American activities -- especially when they are overseas. Robert Redford is in the Czech Republic for the 40th International Film Festival where, during an interview, he said he regretted that U.S. journalists were not investigating the administration of President Bush. (Has anyone besides me noticed how Redford's face has aged just like the picture of Dorian Gray?)

PRESIDENTIAL SCHEDULE: President and Mrs. Bush travel to Denmark for the G8 Summit next week.

The presidential party will leave Washington for Copenhagen, Denmark, on Tuesday, July 5. They will arrive late in the evening, where they will greet Her Majesty the Queen Margrethe and His Royal Highness Prince Henrick.

On Wednesday, July 6th, the President and First Lady will begin their morning by having breakfast with Prime Minister and Mrs. Rusmussen. The President and Prime Minister will meet after breakfast, followed by a joint press availability. Afterwards, the first couple will join a lunch hosted by Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness. The presidential party will fly to Gleneagles, Scotland, Wednesday afternoon.

They will arrive at Glasgow Airport, participate in an arrival ceremony, then proceed to Gleneagles. That evening the first couple will join a dinner hosted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

On Thursday, July 7th, the President will meet and have breakfast with Prime Minister Tony Blair and then participate in the first G8 working session. Later that morning, the G8 leaders will meet and have lunch with leaders from emerging economies. After lunch, the official G8 summit photograph will be taken, followed by the second working session. Thursday evening will include a working dinner.

On Friday, July 8th, the President will participate in the third G8 working session, followed by a meeting and lunch with G8 and African leaders. After lunch, the presidential party will depart for Washington.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: Excerpts from the President's Address to the Nation, Ft. Bragg, NC, June 28, 2005:

Some wonder whether Iraq is a central front in the war on terror. Among the terrorists, there is no debate. Hear the words of Osama Bin Laden: "This Third World War is raging" in Iraq. "The whole world is watching this war." He says it will end in "victory and glory, or misery and humiliation."

The lesson...is clear: The terrorists can kill the innocent, but they cannot stop the advance of freedom. The only way our enemies can succeed is if we forget the lessons of September the 11th, if we abandon the Iraqi people to men like Zarqawi, and if we yield the future of the Middle East to men like Bin Laden. For the sake of our nation's security, this will not happen on my watch.

America has done difficult work before. From our desperate fight for independence to the darkest days of a Civil War, to the hard-fought battles against tyranny in the 20th century, there were many chances to lose our heart, our nerve, or our way. But Americans have always held firm, because we have always believed in certain truths. We know that if evil is not confronted, it gains in strength and audacity, and returns to strike us again. We know that when the work is hard, the proper response is not retreat, it is courage.

After September the 11th, 2001, I told the American people that the road ahead would be difficult, and that we would prevail. Well, it has been difficult -- and we are prevailing. Our enemies are brutal, but they are no match for the United States of America, and they are no match for the men and women of the United States military.

Lest we ever forget: On January 20, 2009, President George W. Bush will retire as his successor takes the Oath of Office. God help us all if the American people falter and elect a president who will not continue GWB's determination and perseverance in combating the jihadists.

PHOTO OF THE DAY:

Since there are no new photos of the President or his family available today, a retrospective of past July 4th celebrations seems appropriate. This joyous two-fer celebrated both July 4, 2001 and GWB's 55th birthday, July 6, 2001. Arm in arm with Philadelphia Mayor John Street, President Bush passes out birthday cake at an urban block party in Philadelphia July 4, 2001.

President Bush visited the Jefferson Memorial on July 2, 2001 as part of the beginning of Independence Day celebrations. The President greeted these two boys and other visitors to the memorial dedicated to President Thomas Jefferson, who drafted the Declaration of Independence. Two days later, President Bush visited Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the site of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.

This is the White House caption for the next photo: "With the Secret Service watchful for any illegal moves, the President looks for an opening to throw a perfect spiral pass during a neighborhood game of street football."

Vice President Cheney presides over the swearing in of his old friend and colleague, Donald Rumsfeld, as Secretary of Defense in 2001. Later today, July 2, 2005, our beloved Rummy will be the Grand Marshal at the NASCAR Pepsi 400 race in Daytona, Florida. Every one of the service branches sponsors a NASCAR race team. The U.S. Army car driven by one of NASCAR's really good guys, Joe Nemecheck, qualified great for the race, and Joe thinks he has a good shot to win.

On July 4, 1826, 50 years to the day after signing the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died. In their long lives, Jefferson and Adams were friends, then bitter rivals, then friends again. As Adams was near death, he believed Jefferson outlived him. His last words were, "Jefferson lives." However, Jefferson had actually passed away a few hours earlier.

Sandra Day O'Connor waves after her unanimous confirmation by the U.S. Senate to the Supreme Court on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. in this Sept. 21, 1981 photo. Standing with O'Connor, from left to right, are: Attorney General William French Smith, Sen. Barry Goldwater (R-AZ), Sen. Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ), Vice President George H.W. Bush, and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-SC). (Smith, Goldwater and Thurmond have since passed away. DeConcini -- one of the Keating 5 who retired from the Senate in disgrace, unlike another Arizona senator we know -- became Chairman of the Board of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in 2004.)
