live next to ex-cons and drug addicts who "own" their home

Oh, that's easy.

Call the cops. Be a PITA by calling them daily to complain about the traffic and the noise.

Take pictures, especially of license plates.

Make sure you write the media how the cops seem to be ignoring certain areas of the city.

We tried calling the cops. There's nothing they can do.

My folks installed cameras - but that doesn't do much either. The cops told them they can't legally record voices, so all they have is video and you can't hear what the people are saying.

I told them not to go to the media because they could be portrayed as grumpy people just not wanting to "give the poor family a chance."

The rest of the neighbors complain privately but are too scared to go to the police. I ended up being the one reported because I confronted the POS family.

Nothing can be done. My folks are losing their house that was paid off through their hard work. That they were supposed to be enjoying in their golden years. Gee, thanks, Pres Bush.

Meanwhile, the POS HUD family gets to "own" a house courtesy of taxpayer subsidies, yet they are able to afford two new cars, a swimming pool, all the things we, the taxpayers, can't afford. Unbelievable.

One thing we've learned in our 'hood: It's all about the follow up.

It doesn't matter how many times you call LO regarding a problem property if LO does not fill out an incident report after the call. Many communities have "nuisance properties" addressed in their codes: X number of calls to a certain property within Y time frame can get the tenants evicted and the house boarded. In Lansing, it is three calls within 90 days, equaling a 6-month "red tag" of the house. The catch: the officers who respond MUST fill out an incident report.

The best way to get them to do this is to drive their captain batty with calls following the incident. It takes some time, but in the long run, it can have some great results.
