Fox News ^ | 7-9-05 | Geraldo Riveria

Posted on 07/09/2005 7:38:50 PM PDT by CollegeRepublicanNU

Then, we turn to the mystery in Idaho that has cops searching for a cold-blooded killer. Eight-year-old Shasta Groene, (search) who was kidnapped from the home where her mother and two others were killed, has been released from a hospital and is back at home with her dad. We’ll get an update on her condition from Steve Groene, who is still holding out hope that his missing son, Dylan, will be found alive. And former LAPD detective Mark Fuhrman gives us an inside look at rapist Joseph Duncan's (search) role in the mystery as he unravels this twisted tale. Plus, we’ll talk to Nick Chapman, the alert Denny’s patron who spotted Shasta Groene and called 911, essentially saving the little girl’s life.

They think they may have found the remains of Dylan in Montana but nothing has been confirmed yet. I am praying for a safe return.

I hope we have not forgotten about this story. It deeply disturbs me to learn this man (Duncan) was allowed to roam free as a LEVEL 3! Thank God he is behind bars now.

O'Rielly is supposed to do a "hit" piece on the judge that went easy on the perp. He says the results of their investigation on the judge will air Monday.

Awesome something needs to happen. Geraldo had the Dad of Shasta and Dylan on today and it was very tough to watch. I know there is a lot going on in the news right now.. But I really think this is one of the more important stories...

I tuned the dad out when he said those responsible for Duncan not being in prison goes all the way to the top, including President Bush.

Yes, it was the President's fault that his three kids were in the cutody of their meth using mom who was full of the stuff when the kids were abducted.*sigh* The system dealing with pedophiles is , however, broken. And it's time to fix it. Unfortunately, that is a state issue in a federal system with the feds involved only when the perp crosses state lines with the kids.

I disregarded that comment but was stunned by it. People say things they don't mean in these kinds of situations though. I just want to see Dylan brought back alive. And so does everyone else in America including President Bush.

I think I understand what you're getting at (states failing to sound an alert when one of their pervs go missing) but want to point out that the FBI was involved in this case from early on. To what extent, I don't know but there was a substantial reward for info posted on the FBI website.

This was a long time coming we need to fix our flaws immediatly this cannot happen again. We need tracking devices on these offenders. It is just sick.

I'm saying the penalties set for child molestation and the terms of release are set by the states, not the federal government. The FBI and feds get involved only when a child is taken across state lines by the perp.THEN and only then is it a federal matter.

Not quite true. Crossing state lines makes it a federal crime. I did some more digging and the FBI was heavily involved in the investigation early on in the case.

May 24, 2005 (Spokane) Spokesman Review:

Thirty more investigators from the FBI are joining the biggest criminal investigation in Kootenai County history, as a team that sometimes numbers in the hundreds assists with the search for two missing North Idaho siblings and whoever killed three of their loved ones.

Along with the manpower, the FBI is offering up to $100,000 in reward money for information that leads to the safe return of the children or helps authorities capture their abductors, FBI special agent Timothy J. Fuhrman announced Monday during a press conference with county Sheriff Rocky Watson....

It is a federal matter because it is a federal crime.
Relating to the remarks in question, the children's father--like most Americans--assume the President has powers he doesn't. Our federal system has all but vanished from the public mind--and why shouldn't it, with Presidents in recents decades acting as if they were PTA heads, etc.

At the minimum. I have some other ideas about what to do with them but it won't be happening--inside the legal system.

I going to pretend that the dad has a hyphenated last name & cut him a lot of slack. He has every right to pissed to the nth degree. Just guessing, but I imagine that President Bush sees it pretty much the same way I do.

I would hope that (at this stage), the media would let Mr. Groene make the call about what details to release.

I would hope that we all turn off the inexplicable filth that Fox and the others pass off as news.
Cheap, tawdry exploitation of tradgedy is criminal.

I don't agree with that. They are being delicate about the details, but it's imperative that the details come out....THAT's the way that people will become active for demanding change....

What is your opinion about the pics and videos from the WTC being played, i.e.,the jumpers and the audio of the thuds, etc?

THAT was disgusting, and the media has decided to keep it from us.

Well, many Americans have now moved past that, apparently...

I agree with you. The whole story really does need to come out.

I have a daughter nearly Shasta's age, and I want people to be shocked enough to demand change. The public already knows that Shasta and Dylan were sexually abused by their captor, so it's too late to soft-pedal the details in the interest of protecting their privacy.

What I really want to know more than anything else is how the stage was set for the Groene murder/kidnappings. It's already been established that Mrs. Groene and her boyfriend were casual drug users who entertained guests at their home, but where did Joseph Duncan fit into this picture? What does it mean to say he picked this family "at random"? How did he become acquainted with these people in the first place? Did he attend one of their barbecues as a friend-of-a-friend...or what?

I have also been wondering where Duncan found the money to travel around the Northwest. I know that he was driving a stolen rented Jeep, but where did his pocket money come from? How did he pay for the gas he purchased at the convenience store where he and Shasta were caught on videotape, or the meal at Denny's where he was apprehended?

Finally, I've been thinking a lot about Steve Groene and also the father of Jessica Lunsford in Florida. These men probably weren't the sort of people who ever expected to find themselves thrust into the spotlight prior to the abduction and abuse of their children. Many people would have crumbled under those horrible circumstances. Even if some people don't agree with every word Steve Groene says, I'm glad that at least both fathers turned out to be articulate enough to voice their outrage and capture the public's attention.

Anyway, I'm just thinking out loud. I don't want this subject to quietly disappear. I'm outraged and I want the details to come out for the sake of vulnerable children everywhere...this story is simply too evil to become yesterday's news and eventually forgotten.
