LOS ANGELES (AP) - Goats grazing on 12 acres of brush at San Pedro's Peck Park Canyon for the past two weeks should have the wildfire danger eliminated this week.

"The goats were happy, the city was happy and the park looks beautiful. We look forward to welcoming them back," Councilwoman Janice Hahn said.

The city's pilot program brought in 143 goats on June 28 to clear away the brush. Oregon-based Nanny & Billy's Vegetative Management was paid $11,500 to clear the park's Hernandez Ranch area in advance of the wildfire season.

"Basically, the department likes the goat idea," area recreation and parks superintendent Ron Berkowitz said. "I'm looking into (adding) Bandini Canyon for next year. I think it will work."

My neighbors did this last month. It became a little attraction for the week they were there.

Well, if you really, really want pictures of goats “at work” (but in Chabot Park – not the one in the article) I’ve got a few of them…

Goats are the best natural solution for these problems.

My cousin rented a dozen goats once to eat a quarter acre of poison ivy and scrub thorns in Massachusetts. He wanted to open a new field that was nearly impenetrable, even with a troy brushwacker.

They ate the land clean in a week.
