From The NYT Letters to the Editors page, Saturday, July 16, 2005:
Sharp Elbows and Karl Rove (3 Letters)
To the Editor:
By now we all know that American politics is a contact sport and that Karl Rove is no Boy Scout. However, it is also equally obvious to me that the Democratic machine is using his alleged involvement in the leaking of Valerie Plame's identity for pure political gain. The feigned outrage and pseudo-moralizing are just too much.
Let's get one thing straight: neither Democrats nor Republicans are more virtuous than the other. To insinuate otherwise is to stretch credulity past the breaking point.
No, the Rove era does not represent a new low point in Washington; on the contrary, it is "more of the same." I would hazard to speculate that the Democrats would love to have an operative with Mr. Rove's skills in their camp.
Charles J. Huebner
Petoskey, Mich., July 15, 2005
To the Editor:
Paul Krugman asks, "How did our political system get to this point?" The answer is so simple I can't believe Mr. Krugman even needs to ask.
The conservatives have newly adopted the strategies that have served liberals well for 25 years. Conservatives have finally decided to fight fire with fire.
Michael M. Dezzani

These NYT readers sure don't seem to be buying the negative spin on Rove!
BTW, Gov Bush weighed in recently on the Rove matter
HERE.

I meant to bold this part, too (from the first letter above):
The feigned outrage and pseudo-moralizing are just too much.

Good to read that John Q. Public is not taken in by the demoncRAT and MSM attempts to fell a top Bush Administration official. MSM and the demented demoncRATS have been attacking the Bush Administration since November 2000 trying to bring the Administration down to their level of corruptness. But as the Prez says, "that dog won't bite."

In fact the Republicans and Democrats are not the same. The democrats lie, tell half truths and fill their speaches with hate and innuendo. The fact is the public does see a difference.

It all goes back to Joe Wilson endangering Americans by painting their president as a liar who deliberately made up stories in order to justify invading Iraq.
Wilson gave Islamicists another excuse for calling America the "Great Satan."
Perfidia
Joe took the Islamicists' side,
When he said that the President lied.
Since the Times spread Joe's tale,
Please put them in jail
And, certainly, Joe should be fried

Good to read that John Q. Public is not taken in
Dem leaders never seem to think much about John Q. Public aka THE VOTER! Because the voter is, of course, willing to wait until the end of the investigation -- and, any trial!

I know what you mean, but I think the writer was making a general point about "politics."

It all goes back to Joe Wilson...
I think it does go back to him, because the first question some people had was probably:
"How is this guy able to write a NYT Op Ed piece about what appears to be an official trip (when an official trip requires a signed confidentiality agreement)???"

Such a wonderful portrait of Senator Charles Schumer, the self-appointed Grand Marshall Joe Wilson's Frog-Marching Parade and Extravaganza

They do have one thing right. It's more of the same. The Dems lie about scandals they create when they're in power and they lie about scandals they create when they're not in power.

"How is this guy able to write a NYT Op Ed piece about what appears to be an official trip (when an official trip requires a signed confidentiality agreement)???"That should have been the first issue addressed. I'd like to see his travel authorization with supporting documents.
To: Ben Hecks
Well, uh, you see, now we find out - it was actually NOT an "official" tip.
Next question, from one reporter to another reporter: So, who sent Wilson?
Well, uh, his wife had something to do with it.
Next question from same reporter: Really?
The next sound you hear are phones of public officials ringing, as reporters call them to inform them of Wilson's wife's position and confirm Wilson's wife's involvement.
I think that's something akin to what went down. But the Dems make it sound like Rove was sitting around in the West Wing phoning every reporter he knew in order to leak Wilson's wife's name, when I don't think he initiated anything.
Joe Wilson initiated it when he published an Op-Ed piece that did not make clear this was NOT an official trip -- so, what he "found out" as a tourist was bound to be less than an official trip might yield. That is just my opinion on it. (Of course, if he had made clear it was not an official trip, such a disclosure might have muted the intense interest and response he received from his article.) In short, everyone wants a scoop!
