Mayo farmer found guilty of manslaughter

20 July 2005 22:37 A Co Mayo farmer has been found guilty of the manslaughter of a Traveller during a violent incident at his farm in October of last year.

Padraic Nally, of Funshinaugh, Cross, Co Mayo, was found not guilty of the murder of John Ward, a father of 11, from Carrowbrowne Halting Site, on the outskirts of Galway city.

At the Central Criminal Court in Castlebar, a jury of seven women and five men brought in a verdict of guilty of manslaughter but not guilty of murder after two hours of deliberation on the sixth day of his trial.

Mr Justice Paul Carney remanded Nally on continuing bail to be sentenced in the Central Criminal Court in Dublin on 11 November.

Nally had pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.

Mr Justice Paul Carney addressed the jury briefly this morning before they began their deliberations at 11.15am. Yesterday the trial heard closing submissions from prosecution and defence counsel. Judge Paul Carney also concluded his summary of the evidence and his direction to the jury.

At lot in common with the Tony Martin case in England.

Pity he didn't get off altogether - like Tony Martin in Britain, he was been hassled for a long time by Tinkers.

during a violent incident at his farm

So "during a violent incident" means "while the 'Traveller' was committing a crime"?

father of 11

I have two questions: by how many women, and how many of the kids did he actually raise?

No right to self defense in Ireland has always puzzled me. Farmers are allowed shotguns but constrained in their use in times of danger. Some varmints are just bigger than others.

Yes, these farms also have many horses which is where we get mayo-neighs.

Aren't the Travellers a gypsy-crime organization or some such thing? More background on them would be helpful to some of us uncultured rubes here in flyover country. :^)

Most people don't know that back in 1912, hellmann's mayonnaise was
manufactured in england. In fact, the titanic was carrying 12,000 jars
of the condiment scheduled for delivery in vera cruz, mexico, which was
to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in new york. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise
ever delivered to mexico....
But as we know....The great ship did not make it to new york.... The
ship hit an iceberg and sank.... And the cargo was forever lost.... The
people of mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly
awaiting its delivery....Were disconsolate at the loss....
Their anguish was so great, that they declared a national day of
mourning which they still observe to this day....
The national day of mourning occurs each year on may 5th....
And is known....Of course....As sinko de mayo
