Paying ‘the Base’ - (Howard Fineman on why Pres chose Roberts; not too bad for a liberal opinion!)
MSNBC.COM ^ | JULY 20, 2005 | HOWARD FINEMAN

Posted on 07/20/2005 7:30:28 PM PDT by CHARLITE

Ever loyal, President Bush is rewarding conservatives with his choice of John Roberts—a man that liberals will have difficulty blocking.

George W. Bush keeps surprising the wise guys. They keep thinking that he’s going to be something other than what he is and that he will do something other than what he says he will do. Well, he and Karl Rove built his career on West Texas Bible Belt conservatism, with deep ancestral ties to the Establishment “up East.” And it was that president—half Cambridge, all “Come to Jesus”—who chose John G. Roberts Jr. for the U.S. Supreme Court.

In the words of the old Texas cliché, President Bush is the kind of leader, and person, who “dances with the one that brung him.” He is as loyal as a hunting dog. On a personal level, his inner circles stay inner and stay around him forever. It’s the same with politics. He owes “the base”—religious conservatives, corporate conservatives, Federalist Society libertarian conservatives—and he pays.

Doggedness vs. candor This kind of personality is rare in politics, even rarer in the city of Washington. Bush likes to pull surprises, but only on matters of timing. George Bush hides in plain sight, a tactic that works here, since everyone always assumes the game is all about misdirection. Bush said he wanted to choose justices in the Scalia-Thomas tradition. Why would anyone think that he wouldn’t follow through on that promise?

Impeccable credentials, and a nice guy

Besides, politically, abortion alone would not be nearly enough to derail the guy. His credentials are simply too good. He’s too well-liked around town, too well-regarded by expert practitioners in Supreme Court jurisprudence. Boies and Walter Dellinger, two of the best (Democratic) Supreme Court advocates around, sing Roberts’s praises.

IMO, the president selected John G. Roberts because his record is pristine, his conservative credentials unassailable and his personal life without blemish.

This guy Roberts does seem like a star. Smart and articulate as hell, looks good on TV, etc. Can't believe I never heard of him before.

Makes me wish he could run for President in '08. Sure beats Frist.

"George W. Bush keeps surprising the wise guys."

One of them was Dan Blatherer. Our great Texas poker player rode that one out and watched ole Dan catapult himself right over the cliff, along with Bill Burkett and Mary Mapes, like proverbial lemmings. I guess our guy sure surprised the he$$ outta that bunch of "wise guys!"

Thanks for the comment, stylin!

The comment "Come to Jesus" is a slap to Christians from a Jew. If a Christian person said something equal about a Jew, all HELL would break loose!

"The comment "Come to Jesus" is a slap to Christians from a Jew."

I was amazed that Fineman wrote such an insulting line! Utterly unnecessary, IMO, but he needed to take some swipes at evangelicals, whom he and all liberals believe are behind Bush's success......which is nonsense. Bush appeals to a wide array of patriotic Americans who are appalled at what the once decent Democrat party has deteriorated into.

Thanks for your comment, Ann. Very astute.

"[David] Boies and Walter Dellinger, two of the best (Democratic) Supreme Court advocates around, sing Roberts’s praises.

They have faith that he will listen to reason when presented with well-crafted arguments on the high court. They think he is the opposite of a hack."

Even if they are dems it is nice to know that SOMEONE approves of a person not being a hack, because there has been far, far too much tolerance of hackery of late.

PS, very interesting bit at the end about the RC influence in DC as a real place where people live, not just an idea or place of [gov't] business. Fineman is pretty good usually, he's no hack himself, as a matter of fact!

There is the essence of it all.

...Bush hunting liberal turkey. It's a great sport. But it's becoming too easy.
