No butts behind wheel? N.J. moves on smokers

TRENTON, N.J. - Ashtrays have been disappearing in cars like fins on Cadillacs, and so could smoking while driving in New Jersey, under a measure introduced in the Legislature.

Although the measure faces long odds, it still has smokers incensed and arguing it’s a Big Brother intrusion that threatens to take away one of the few places they can enjoy their habit.

“The day a politician wants to tell me I can’t smoke in my car, that’s the day he takes over my lease payments,” said John Cito, a financial planner from Hackensack with a taste for $20 cigars.

Oh yeah, another part of our societal slide into the crapper.

I have recently started tagging articles representative of "The Slide" with slide as a keyword.

How is it we all made it through the 20th Century without all these wonderful laws to protect us?

I am not a smoker, and never have been. I don't allow friends or family to smoke in my vehicles, but this proposed "law" is ridiculous! What is next? Will they ban radios and CD's because they are distracting to the driver? What about talking to a passenger while driving? What about chewing gum while driving? This is total nonsense and people need to rise up and vote these smoking nazi's out of office pronto.

Most gun dealers won't even ship firearms to New Jersey. Too many bogus unConstitutional laws. I'm glad I don't live there.

Anyone of the politicans can submit legislation its if it passes you need to be concerned but right now the government owns everything. Need I remind you of the recent surpreme court, gov can take your land and give to someone else.

What difference is a car.

That's exactly how I feel. Either all or none. Don't selectively ban anything they have a vendetta against.

Translation, NJ needs a form of revenue ticket that people will just pay and not go to court and fight. As long as there is no permanent record affecting insurance or driving record people will just pay and move on.

I wonder what would happen if they said (Constitutions)that traffic citations had to be revenue neutral. (zero profit)

and banana splits

I can't tell you how many times I came **this close** to totaling my car trying to eat a banana split while driving! If only they'd ban them in the car, I'd never do it again!
