CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Sharon Percy Rockefeller, president of WETA public television in Washington and former board chairman of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, has been diagnosed with colorectal cancer, her husband, Sen. Jay Rockefeller, said Monday.
Rockefeller said his 60-year-old wife will be undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment for the next three months.
"Sharon is a fighter, and I know she's going to beat this," Jay Rockefeller said in a statement. "She is a strong and loving person, and we are fortunate to be surrounded by so many supportive friends and relatives."
Sharon Rockefeller has served as president and CEO of WETA since 1989. Before that, she was on the CPB board for 12 years, four years as its chairman.
She was West Virginia's first lady when Jay Rockefeller was governor from 1977 to 1985, before he joined the Senate.
Her father is former Illinois Sen. Charles Percy. A Republican, he was defeated in his bid for a fourth term in 1984, at the same time his son-in-law, a Democrat, won his first Senate term.
Sharon Rockefeller's twin sister, Valerie Percy, was murdered in the Percy family's home in 1966, during the time their father was campaigning for the Senate.
Ick. That doesn't sound fun.
That's too bad. I hope her cancer responds to treatment and she makes a full recovery.
Sad, was it her twin who was murdered so many years ago?
How sad--I wish her well, even if I don't like her husband. I remember the murder of her sister---they never found the murderer.
I pray she beats this.
Dear me, I don't remember the sister being killed, but that's probably because I was 8 years old. I hope this lady gets well soon.
Prayers for her for a full recovery. Cancer sucks.
Here is Sharon.
The tragedy ended Senator Percy's anticipated run for the WH.
I remember that story very well. It was a very sad time for them. I remember Sharon and Jay Rockerfeller when they were first married and very young. Good luck to Sharon and I will pray she does indeed beat this setback. God bless you Sharon...stay strong and I know you will fight like the champ you are.
Yes it was. Very sad.
Maybe one of those persons who do the Cold Cases could reopen it and perhaps solve it once and for all.
Do you think that LBJ had anything to do with the murder? He might have thought that he needed to carry Illinois to win re-election in 1968.
Yes, the killer was never caught...............
I have always wondered about that murder case. Supposedly it was unsolved. Also, I remember the family dog did not bark; therefore it was surmised at the time the intruder was known like a boyfriend. Any updates?
Also, I got the impression the Percy family wasnt too keen on solving the murder fearing it was going to turnout to be a family embarrassment. It wasnt pursued with too much vigor if one compares it to todays Aruba incident. The Percy family had money up the wazzoo (sp?) to investigate this forever.
Holy Father, please heal Sharon and restore her to complete health, in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
LBJ didn't run for re-election in 1968. Nixon defeated VP Hubert Humphrey that year.
Wasn't Winfield Rockefeller of Arkansas diagnosed with cancer recently. I believe he is related to Jay.
Something really upset LBJ not to run in 1968. I remember the announcement, and it looked he had seen a ghost.
It is possible somebody found some skeletons in LBJ's closet and were going to use them on him if he ran. He was one very scared person when he made the announcement he would not run (IMHO).
