Green For Launch Political Correctness: After 2 1/2 years and $1.4 billion spent to make the space shuttle safer, the same problem that doomed Columbia now plagues Discovery. Has environmentalism doomed the shuttle program?
After the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon re-entry in 2003, a scathing report by the Columbia Accident Investigating Board noted the contributions NASA's "organization and culture" made to the shuttle disaster.
But the root cause for both the disintegration of the shuttle Columbia due to thermal tiles damaged by chunks of insulating foam falling off the large external fuel tank, the earlier loss of Challenger, and the repetition of the foam problem with Discovery, may be the decision imposed on NASA to use parts and materials that were more environmentally friendly.

Finally!
Environmentally friendly - yes.
Shuttle/people friendly - no.
Mark Levin just read pieces of this article on his show. You'll never see it on CNN, though.
I am a bit curious about how we know that the old foam was safer.
i guess the amount of cracks after compared to before the new foam..probably extrapalated after the columbia accident
Did this graphic come through, or do you have to be a subscriber to see it?
I'm sure they did some testing but it wouldn't be easy to replicate the conditions that cause the foam to come off. I guess I'm just wondering if we may be seeing more because there are more cameras watching.
Interesting concentration of hits around the external fuel tank attatchments.
Note the increase in the number of hits that started in mid-97 (chart on left side of graphic). That's the cut-in point for the new Enviro-friendly process for applying the insulation.
That's the sort of evidence I was looking for.
yes
It's about time the LSM started to pick this story up. What do we have to do, FORCE FEED it to them?
