The killing of an arts journalist
World Defense Review ^ | August 4, 2005 | Abigail R. Esman

They killed Steven Vincent.

Not, like Theo van Gogh - a man with loud and angry opinions who spoke against religions or people or ideas - but a journalist who only wanted to tell the truth; a journalist who, like me, spent most of his career writing about what was beautiful, about the great achievements of humanity, of civilization, the products of abstraction, of metaphor, of ideas. He wrote of those who challenged 'what is,' those who challenged beliefs, not with bombs but with paint and clay and marble. And when he himself challenged ideas, he did not use bullets. He used a pen.

They intend to kill more.

Yup, they intend to kill more. If you are peaceful, all the easier. Kind of like the Vikings rampaging through England -- it just made it a whole lot easier on them that the Brits were peaceful.

>>But the people who snuffed out his life in a few moments of personal horror for Steven were not people looking for enlightenment. They sought, rather, where possible, to destroy it.<<
I'm glad she realizes that these people are animals. They seek nothing but destruction of those who are not like them. They need to be killed, not reasoned with.

The article is very sweetly written but it is almost entirely bereft of information.

The author seems to know who "they" are and what "they" did, and where, and when, and why -- but she leaves these factual details competely out of the piece.

You are correct. One does not try to reason with a rabid dog, one shoots it before it can do any harm.

"You are correct. One does not try to reason with a rabid dog, one shoots it before it can do any harm. "

At the bottom of her article, there is a link to another article she wrote, dated 1 August 05.

or here is the URL: http://www.reportingwar.com/esman080105.shtml

It is titled "Life worse than death for a terrorist" and I think she makes her point quite well in this one. I don't normally like imprisoning people, but I think I could make an exception for this kind of thing.

Hi Old Student

She does make a good point. If there are captured alive then yes, lock them up and leave them there until they are no more.

However, if the choice is to take the shot or allow a homicide bomber to kill himself and all those around him, then I vote for taking the shot. As barbaric as it sounds, I do like the idea of bullets dipped in pig's blood or pig fat. Let the terrorists know that their martyrdom will not get them into heaven.

Just my $0.02 worth. Have a good weekend.

Best regards

Sergio

Sorry about that. The second sentence should read: If they are captured alive then yes, lock them up and leave them there until they are no more.
