Just a heads-up's to FR geeks. The meteors have already started, but it looks as if this could be a real event.

Why can't they schedule these for a more convenient time?

Full article here:

http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2005/22jul_perseids2005.htm

"July 22, 2005: Got a calendar? Circle this date: Friday, August 12th. Next to the circle write "before sunrise" and "Meteors!" Attach all of the above to your refrigerator in plain view so you won't miss the 2005 Perseid meteor shower."

From the article:

Editor's Notes: (1) The Perseids are a northern hemisphere meteor shower. Southerners can see Perseids, too, but at greatly reduced rates.

Ya'd think these fer'ners would have to pay more to see it....

At last sighting, Algore was seen ducking behind a glacier in Iceland, screaming: "The SKY is FALLING, THE SKY IS FALLING !!!"

I'm just delighted that I won't be freezing my rear-end off as I seem to have to do with the other major meteor showers.

Sakes, why does the best time to see it always have to be at 3:00 AM?

Probably local time. I'm thinking that that's the time when the earth rotates into the right position for the oncoming meteors to hit the atmosphere above you. I'm not an astronomer, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night....

And you will like August. Picture this: It's four in the morning. The sky is dark. The breeze is pleasant. Mars is beaming down from the east while meteors flit across the sky.

Maybe you should go circle the calendar again.

Editor's Notes: ... (2) All times mentioned in this story are local, so, e.g., "2 a.m." means 2 o'clock in the morning in your time zone.

This is at the end of the linked article.
