Cannon declines debate with Colorado rival (Tancredo)

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, known for his outspoken and sometimes outlandish views on immigration, will be in Utah later this month and agreed to debate his political rival, Rep. Chris Cannon.

Cannon says he has more pressing engagements - working on the irrigation system at his home.

Tancredo, a Colorado Republican and leading spokesman of the anti-immigration movement, was invited to the state by the group Utahns For Immigration Reform and Enforcement, or UFIRE, a group that battered Cannon over his immigration stance during his 2004 re-election bid.

He agreed to spend Aug. 24 to 25 in the state, making appearances in St. George, Provo and Salt Lake City. On behalf of UFIRE, Bluffdale City Councilwoman Martha Speed invited Cannon to debate Tancredo at an event in Provo on Aug. 24, but Cannon said he will be indisposed.

"Congressman Cannon plans to spend the 24th at home working on his irrigation system,” said his chief of staff, Joe Hunter. “However, given Mr. Tancredo's recent interest in religious sites, we would suggest our visitor from Colorado might want to occupy his time touring [LDS] Temple Square."

The reference to Tancredo's “interest in religious sites” is a dig at recent comments he made in a radio interview that, if Muslim terrorists mount a nuclear strike in the United States, that the United States should retaliate by bombing Muslim holy sites, including Mecca.

“What are we dealing with here, an arrogant jokester?” asked UFIRE chairman Russell Sias.

“Do we disagree with Representative Cannon's stand? Absolutely. But we don't have to set him up. The issues themselves will do that. When you're wrong, you're wrong.”

Cannon's spokesman, Charles Isom, said, “Congressman Cannon is going to engage in this debate on the floor of Congress and he doesn't really see this as a productive way to advance this debate.”

Recently, Tancredo has been visiting presidential primary states trying to force Republican candidates to take a hard-line stance on immigration and, if none does, has not ruled out running himself.

He and Cannon have a rocky past, due to Cannon's support for President Bush's immigration policies, and sponsorship of legislation that would allow illegal immigrants to earn citizenship working in the agricultural industry.

In a floor speech in the US House, Tancredo said he didn't know the workers were undocumented

Tancredo hired illegals.

You're contradicting yourself. If Tancredo didn't know that the workers were illegal aliens, then he couldn't have known that he had hired illegal aliens. So thank you for proving my point that Tancredo didn't hire illegal aliens to work on his house. Tancredo hired who he believed were legal workers to work on his house.

Many here call for imprisonment and fines for employers who hire illegals. That would also apply to Tancredo.

We're talking about imprisonment and fines for employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens. Are you really that dense?

And ordinarily the homeowner doesn't hire the workmen. The contractor does. If that were true in Tancredo's case he'd even have less reason to know of their illegal status.

And that's exactly what happened in the case regarding Tancredo. Tancredo simply hired the contractor to do the work on his house and the contractor hired the workers. Tancredo didn't hire the workers directly.

If you don't know how to follow replies back up the thread, let me do it for you.

Reply # 19 suggested that Cannon's workers should have their papers check. I simply pointed out that it was Tancredo who hired the illegals and wasn't man enough to own up to it. If it is appropriate to check Cannon's employess, would it not be appropriate to check Tancredo's employees?

But it goes further than that.

It was Team America PAC that contributed money to Cannon's opponent in the 04 election. Tancredo started the PAC. His name is used on the PAC literature. He solicits funds for the PAC.

When DeLay, Gingrich, and other republicans jumped Tancredo about violating Reagan's 11th Commandment, Tancredo weasled out. He said that he has nothing to do with Team America PAC. He said he gave it to Pat Buchannan. He must really like Pat.

Tancredo is a two-faced, back-stabbing dipwad.

You are saying that your political savior is a man who pleads ignorance.

Your leader is a loser.

It is very simple for you or Tancredo. If you don't want illegals on the job, you specify it. It happens all the time and is no different than requiring proof of insurance.

What I'm saying is that Tancredo didn't hire illegal aliens to work on his house, and that's a fact you can't dispute no matter how much you try to spin it.

By the way, Tancredo is not my political savior and he is not my leader.

The fact is, illegals remodeled Tancredo's home. If Tancredo didn't want illegals on the job all he has to do is tell the contractor. He didn't because he didn't care/because he didn't think he would get caught.

Why bother debating with Quislings and false-flag freepers? They don't believe one word of the transparent lies they write, they are simply propagandists with the goal of wrecking our Republic.

Cannon, like most in congress are bought and paid for by special interest who don't give a damn about the welfare of the American working family.

Huh, Canon like tancredo are American Conservative Union standouts.

LINK

Too bad tom tancredo can't work with his fellow Republicans and is prone to grandstanding and backstabbing.

Now what I am I supposed to think about that?

And Rep. Chris Cannon. brags about joining with two Democrats (Conyer of all people being one of them )to introduce Border Security legislation.

Knowing what the Dems think of border security, what I am I supposed to think about that?

And why do you constantly lie about other FReepers and attempt to slander them just because they don't hold the same fringe views you do?

Amazing that all you ever contribute to FR are personal attacks on other members and the same pieces of picture SPAM over and over.

I'm not defending Cannon. Never heard of him before. All I'm suggesting is that Tancredo would be more effective if worked within the party than in grandstanding against it.

I wonder whether he's concerned about being effective, or if his concern is to elevate his reputation on a national scale. I haven't decided, but it's an unusual and risky road he's going down.
