Intelligence unit reportedly identified lead hijacker as potential threat before 9/11

More than a year before the Sept. 11 attacks, a small, highly classified military intelligence unit identified Mohamed Atta and three other future hijackers as likely members of an al-Qaida cell operating in the United States, according to a former defense intelligence official and a Republican member of Congress.

In the summer of 2000, the intelligence team, known as "Able Danger," prepared a chart that included visa photographs of the four men and recommended to the military's Special Operations Command that the information be shared with the FBI, Rep. Curt Weldon of Pennsylvania and the former intelligence official said Monday.

The recommendation was rejected, and the information was not shared, they said, apparently at least in part because Atta and the others were in the United States on valid entry visas. Under American law, U.S. citizens and green card holders may not be investigated in intelligence operations by the military or intelligence agencies.

Rush was talking about this as a "see I told you so." This was the Jamie Gorelick "wall of separation" policy.

What did clinton know, when did he know it, and what did he do about it?

Any chance either President Clinton or President Bush rcvd. any intel on this? This is a most unusual story for the NYTimes to post. The timeline suggests they were monitored in the waning months of the Clinton presidency. Don't suppose Sandy Berger and his documents in pants are a part of this story in any way....

Meanwhile ex-Presidnet Clint-scum-bag is in China and lectures the world on how US terrorism policy must proceed.

We know his actions are quite simple, "Suck Honey, Suck! Blow (it) is just a fugure-of-speech!

As soon as the NYT figures out that this occurred during the Clinton administration, this story will be killed. Somebody's career is on the line for this gaff.

If SOCOM knew about it why didn't they remove the threats at their own discretion? As far as the public and judicial system is concerned Delta doesn't exist.

I'm betting someone high up, like a certain sexual predator/commander-in-chief made it clear that no one in the military was to do anything about the hijackers.

Let's not forget how AlGore's candidacy fit into the equation ... would a disclosure of an AlQ cell operating in the US be squashed so as to not hurt AlGore's chances?

Someday, someone will finally indict and try the Clintons for the crimes they committed while holding government office. I can only hope they get what the Rosenbergs got.

I don't know about the NYT. I read it in the St. Louis rag. It had the NYT byline.
