NYT: Officials See Risk in the Release of Images of Iraq Prisoner Abuse
New York Times ^ | August 12, 2005 | JULIA PRESTON

Senior Pentagon officials have opposed the release of photographs and videotapes of the abuse of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, arguing that they would incite public opinion in the Muslim world and put the lives of American soldiers and officials at risk, according to documents unsealed in federal court in New York.

Gen. Richard B. Myers... said... he believed that "riots, violence and attacks by insurgents will result" if the images were released.

The [ACLU wants] to obtain under the Freedom of Information Act the release of 87 photos and four videotapes taken at Abu Ghraib....

"I condemn in the strongest terms the misconduct and abuse depicted in these images," General Myers said in the statement. "It was illegal, immoral and contrary to American values and character."

Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein authorized the A.C.L.U. yesterday to make public papers it filed on Aug. 3 contesting the Pentagon argument that the images must be withheld because they put individuals at risk. The A.C.L.U. said the government was seeking to withhold the photos only "to avert adverse reaction," undermining the information act....

"The situation on the ground in Iraq is dynamic and dangerous," General Myers said, with 70 insurgent attacks daily. He also said there was evidence that the Taliban, though still weak, was gaining ground because of popular discontent in Afghanistan.

General Myers cited the violence that erupted in some Muslim countries in May after Newsweek published an item....

"It is probable that Al Qaeda and other groups will seize upon these images and videos as grist for their propaganda mill, which will result in, besides violent attacks, increased terrorist recruitment, continued financial support and exacerbation of tensions between Iraqi and Afghani populaces and U.S. and coalition forces," he said.

Well yeah... of course that's the only result of releasing more images of a crime that has already been investigated and prosecuted.

It's what the ACLU hopes for.

When it is business as usual, Dems never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity to support our troops and American foreign policy. Now another chance has surfaced.

The question is whether Democrats will stand with mainstream Americans is denouncing ACLU efforts to release more photos from Abu Ghraib? Or, were the Dems' voiced concerns about America's image abroad during last years' election season merely empty rhetoric? Will Dems call on the ACLU to cool it so radical Islamists will not be further incited to attack our troops? Make no mistake, lives are at stake.

Sadly, history has shown that we can't bet on Democrats, the ACLU or its MSM supporters to do the responsible thing.

When will groups such as the ACLU and militant anti-US peace groups be indicted by our sleeping Justice Dept. for giving aid and comfort to the enemy in time of war? Did Atty. Gen. Gonzalez take the job so he could retire with a pay check? Has anyone seen or heard from him in months? It's certain that his health won't be broken by the stresses of the job that were dumped on Ashcroft.

The military has already disciplined those involved.

Why can't the Pentagon just destroy them?

Just what I was gonna say, what is it with people holding on to incriminating information anyway?? Just like Nixon and those damn tapes. There wouldn't even have been any ashes to throw out when I got through with them.

for every picture in abu Grab, would you please put a picture from 911? Could you show us a man with panties or marks on his arms and a picture of people jumping to their death from the North tower. For every picture in the prison could you show the panic of innocent people running from a cloud created by a falling building in NYC. Lets have a couple of compared to what in this story.

Watch for this. If the Able Danger scandal grows as large as it should...photos of "abuse" will surface. Leaked from the Senate Intel staff from the left side of the aisle.

Just a hunch.

Why don't they just search the internet to find some photos and/or videos that look like prisoner abuse and pass them off as "real."

Isn't that the usual method of the MSM?
