Maybe because everyone has heard the news in years past that the BP stops chasing if the smugglers drive West on I-8 East (or the wrong way on any freeway), since it's dangerous for everyone. I thought it was a common enough occurrence, at least 2-3 years ago, that people recommended not driving east on I-8 past El Cajon at night.

This kind of thing has been going on for years, wrong-way driving, silicone-inflated tires and everything. The tire thing originated when we started putting those "do not back up -- severe tire damage"-type strips in the roadway to defeat the wrong-way drivers. It's the freakin' Wild West down at the border.

What's surprising about this story is that it's in the press at all. They've been studiously ignoring this kind of stuff for a decade, except when there's some big number of fatalities they can blame on the Border Patrol's pursuit.
