Sudan wants an investigation into strike American of 1998
KHARTOUM - the Sudanese government reiterated Sunday a request for investigation by the United Nations on strike American missiles which had destroyed in 1998 a pharmaceutical factory in Khartoum. They suspected it of producing chemical weapons.
Khartoum invites in an official statement the Security Council of UNO "to inquire into the charges of the United States uttered to attack factory Al-Chifa seven years ago". The text was published at the time of the 7th anniversary of strike.
"This painful memory should be a lesson for the international community to include/understand the risks of the use of the force, the terrorism of State, the non-observance of the laws and international institutions", indicates it.
August 20, 1998, the United States had destroyed the pharmaceutical Al-Chifa factory, in the Sudanese capital, which they suspectaient to produce of the chemical weapons and bonds with the head of terrorist network Al-Qaïda, Oussama Ben Laden. this last had taken refuge in Sudan until 1996.
Strike, coinciding with other raids in Afghanistan, had been justified by the American government like a response with the fatal Al-Qaïda bombardments two weeks earlier against its embassies in Nairobi and Dar be -Salaam. But the factory proved to be one of the principal manufacturers of anti-malaria drugs of the country.

Richard Clarke said that it wasn't just the fact that the plant was owned by Al Qaeda that led to the strike. He stated in his book that the US had intelligence that the plant employed Iraqi chemical weapons scientists.
Isn't that interesting? Someone who's a hero of the Left stating that, in 1998, Al Qaeda and Saddam were in cahoots.
Funny how nobody in the mainstream press noticed this during all their hosannas toward the book.

Seriously, this, along with the Chinese Embassy bombing, totally exposes the Left's hypocrisy. Image the outrage if it happened under Bush's watch. There'd be impeachment hearings right now.
Frankly, Sudan has a right to be pissed as well as a right to an international investigation into why the Clinton Administration bombed that pharmaceutical plant during the Monica senate hearings.
Either Clinton was correct that Al Qaeda was producing WMD's there, or else Clinton was merely attempting to distract attention from his own domestic problems.
I for one cheer on such an investigation. Put Ambassador John Bolton at the UN in charge, too.

Yes, and we apologize. The simple fact is that the Democrat President at the time, Bill Clinton, was a little off his nut because his dark side had been publicly exposed, and the situation was exacerbated by the very poor quality of his cabinet and staff.

They have a nerve really. I actually believe them that the target was a victim of dud intelligence. But the fact that we had to select the targets on the basis of intelligence is because they are a tin-pot, closed, rogue regime that we know harbours terrorists who pose a threat to civilisation as we in the Western world understand it. I am genuinely sorry for anyone innocent who was killed in this attack - but the fault must be shared by the Sudanese government for not offering co-operation (quite the opposite) in the search for people who would do worse.
It is a bit like that Brazillian our police shot in the UK. A tradgedy of bad info reaching those with the trigger fingers ready to ptotect us. I genuinely greive for him, as I do everyone killed in the blasts two weeks earlier. In both cases had there been no terrorist outrages, we wouldn't be relying on dud info. Yes we need to always evaluate our intel procedures and insist on ever increasing quality. And yes we should apologise to any innocents caught up (but only as individuals, not to states themselves). But we should never, ever shy away from showing that we are prepared to use force to protect us and ours.
As someone above has suggested - we should let the UN do a full investigation of this event, if they are also allowed to a full investigation of what has gone on in Darfur. We will then see which is the evil regime.

they also played a role in the capture of Carlos the Jackel (most likely though for "personal" gain)
AND - IIRC they handed over the PKK Leader Ocelan to the Turks
so, they do sometimes cooperate.
