... living in less pleasant areas was linked to higher levels of obesity ...

Well, I was going to get off my a$$ and do some excercise but then I realized that my neighborhood was a dump in need of a Government program and so I sat back down and ate some more Ding-Dongs." [/sarc]

Evidence also suggests that high levels of "incivilities" - such as litter and graffiti - are linked to poor health.

Perhaps if the inner-city obese got off their a**es and cleaned up the litter and graffiti, they'd get some exercise and lose weight!

(And who put the litter and graffiti there in the first place??)

Partly it's because African Americans are more likely to have diabetes, but there are so many reasons. The absolute crap that inner city folks tend to eat (Doritos, Doritos, and more Doritos) is one -- just try to find something remotely healthy in an inner city grocery store. It's doable, but tough.

Of course, I do think a legit reason is that it's dangerous and depressing outside, so people are more likely to stay indoors and stare at their TV sets.

So, which is the cause and which is the effect??

The same is true for many of the Indian Reservations. Native Americans have an appallingly high rate of diabetes that can be directly related to a terrible diet and lack of exercise.

I recently ran into a gentleman who has a snack vending route in one of the local reservations. He reported that his route which covers only a handful of gas stations and convenience stores has the highest sales in the state.
