The NCAA removed the Florida State Seminoles on Tuesday from a list of 18 college and university nicknames subjected to restrictions because of their hostility to American Indians.
The NCAA said it was recognizing the relationship Florida State has long enjoyed with the Seminole Tribe of Florida, which assists the university with its pageantry and celebration of its culture and supports the school's use of its name.
"The staff review committee noted the unique relationship between the university and the Seminole Tribe of Florida as a significant factor," the NCAA said Tuesday. "The decision of a namesake sovereign tribe, regarding when and how its name and imagery can be used, must be respected even when others may not agree."
Florida State President T.K. Wetherell had threatened to sue the NCAA immediately after its Aug. 5 announcement that the school's highly visible nickname, "Seminoles," was defined as "hostile and abusive" by a committee.
The NCAA said it would handle reviews from other schools on a case-by-case basis. The Illinois Illini, Utah Utes and North Dakota Fighting Sioux are among other prominent school nicknames that remain affected by the edict.
Under the NCAA restrictions, teams with hostile nicknames would not be able to use them in postseason tournaments or bowl games.
So they didn't review this before putting them on the "list?" Idiots!
Are the fighting Illini and the Utes next?
Whoa.....how about a little irony here?
The states themselves are named after the tribes!
In other words, someone actually stood up to these PC nazis at the NCAA and they folded like a hooker who got hit in the stomach by a fat guy with sores on his face. </JoeyTribbiani>
Does this mean fans can still do the chop?
Seriesly, the NCAA has outlived its usefulness.
If there's any HOSTILITY going on it's coming from the asses at the NCAA. They have got a lot of nerve to call this hostility.
There we go...
...but since the Tribe of the Celts never endorsed Notre Dame I - Mr. Ridiculously Politically Correct - demand that that school drop the racist moniker "Fighting Irish".
NCAA=Neo Communists, Anti-American.
You are only half right. They folded alright, guess who the "$omeone" was.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I guess Florida St. can expect to be investigated for recruiting violations in the near future. Then they will not dare humiliate the great NCAA bureaucracy again.
The Illini are on the list, I believe.
And from what I read, one of the people on the NCAA committee who made the decision, said the Fighting Irish and the Ragin' Cajuns are next.
BTW, let me say, albeit somewhat belatedly:
Welcome NCAA headquarters to INDIANapolis. INDIANa!
One thing I will say for the NCAA is they push athletes very hard to graduate. Athletes have to have a certain amount of a degree sheet done each year. The first year it is 20% where a normal student doesn't have to have anything on a degree sheet done. But other than that yes the NCAA is useless.
Ute? what's a Ute?
Yes the Illini and the Utah Utes are on the list.
Not a kid from Brooklyn but an Indian tribe from Utah.
