And FSU has a little more clout than the University of Illinois (Illini), University of Utah (Utes), and Central Michigan (Chippewas).

Indeed. And I hope all the remaining colleges on the list threaten legal action just as seriously. It's time the anti-Free Speech Leftists were given the smackdown they deserve and cowed for another hundred years.

'The NCAA showed great wisdom,'' Haggard said by phone from Daytona Beach, where he was involved in a trial. ``We never should have been included in that list. It should never have come to this.

How the heck is it a sign of "wisdom" to announce a unilateral decision against a school, threaten that school with all manner of penalties, have your lawyers tell you that your rear end is about to become dog food, and then reverse your decision in the face of a lawsuit?

That's not "wisdom", that's kowtowing (thought it's the right decision in the end).

''The NCAA position on the use of Native American mascots, names and imagery has not changed,...

The logical inconsistency of this statement is mind boggling.

I have a much better idea --- BAN the NCAA!

The threat of legal action by FSU may not have had much to do with it, but the looming threat of legal action by the Seminole tribe would have been more than the NCAA could stomach. Just imagine the NCAA getting sued by the Seminole tribe for racist interference in the tribe's relationship with the school, and in the tribe-authorized use of the tribe's name in interstate commerce. That would have been a doozy of a court battle.

If the Illini (or other such team) decide to kowtow to the NCAA, they should rename themselves the "CENSORED", with their team uniform design being a big black "CENSORED" sticker where the Illini insignia used to be. Or will the NCAA declare that to somehow be an offensive name?

They buckled under pressure. Certainly had nothing to do with the fact that it was an idiot idea to begin with.

Among the other school still on the list are the University of Illinois (Illini), University of Utah (Utes), and Central Michigan (Chippewas).

Unf'ing believable. The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe had this to say - "The rich relationship that the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe has with CMU cannot be determined by an outside entity without contacting the institution and the government involved. Any arbitrary decision made from an outside source regarding university-tribal relations is not acceptable."

Instead of doing this one University/ team at a time, why don't they all get together and sue the NCAA's ass off. That will be the end of it. Free Speech. This is still American, isn't it?

Want to really hear the native American groups squeal? Have every sports team with an Indian name announce that they "no longer want to be named after THE LOSERS" and they are all changing their names to those of COWBOYS!

And I hate to say it, but the NCAA did what liberals are constantly doing -- running head-on into themselves as they adopt emotional, irrational causes. They in no way wanted to get crossways with the very people they were trying to politically-co-recto-mollify in the first placed!

the NCAA announced it had removed FSU from its list of universities subject to restrictions on the use of Native American mascots and nicknames.

We threatened to set a dozen gators loose in their Corp. office if they didn't back off.

Illinois was never an Indian tribe. It was a confederacy of tribes which negotiated with the French ( as I know it ).

How the NCAA could have a problem with a university called the fighting Illini, named after the state in which it is located, makes absolutely no sense to me.

Their mascot I could maybe see a point. But not the schools name.

I would love to see the University of Illinois put a true Native American in their mascots costume and tell the NCAA to shove it.
