IMHO we should have had boots on the ground in Iran and Syria before the end of 2001. That's my criticism of the war- we got hypnotized by those stupid lines on a map that keep our troops from chasing terrorists into Syria and Iran- just like the VC and NVA used to operate out of Laos and Cambodia. Why the terrorist training camps in Syria's Bekka Valley weren't firebombed on 9/12/2001 I will never know.

"The best way for the United States to keep the strait open would be to land troops on the Iranian side, which would mean a ground war - something that the Iranians would welcome, but America would want to avoid, especially in the light of its bitter experiences in Iraq."
Huh? We kicked the living daylights out of the Iraqi Army...
"Tehran could be expected not only to encourage its Iraqi allies to fight U.S. forces, but also to send thousands of commandos and suicide bombers to support them."
...and we're kicking the living daylights out of the Iranian-backed "insurgents" right now. Does this writer have any other old news?
"While unable to match American firepower, Iranian forces could make up for this to some extent by their Islamist and nationalist fanaticism. "
The Tehran Times is nuttier than a fruitcake if they think religious fanaticism trumps round-the-clock, all-weather bombing campaigns. This person has obviously not been allowed to see what happens to a battlefield during a cluster bomb or FAE attack... or after a couple of divisions of mechanized infantry have rolled through it.
Hope this article wasn't written to try aand scare anyone...

This article makes a lot of assumptions.
Were America and/or Israel attack Iran, they assume:
-that Iran would have the ability to communicate with those who could launch strikes.
-that there would enough electrical power to track and fire on targets.
-that those responsible for ordering counter-attacks would still be alive.
-that the Iran side of the Strait would not resemble the surface of the moon where any vessels to be used in a blockade would be located.
-that Iranian pilots would actually turn their aircraft in our direction, assuring their almost certain deaths.
-that there would be a bridge left standing in a strategic location to move troops and weapons to staging areas.
-that our first strike would do something less than vaporize the Iranian Parliament.
-that the Iranian people would not use this opportunity to overthrow their government in favor of democracy, if not for free porn.

President George W. Bush has reacted by declaring all options open, including military action, which has drawn a stiff rebuke not only from Tehran, but also from Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder of Germany, one of America's allies. Now there's a curious statement...I wouldn't consider Germany an American ally...Germany seems to side mostly with our enemies...

From what I've gathered, the Iranians would have a substantial 'fifth column' to deal with. Which, in a way, would hamper any massive attack from us, since the woule be on our side.
I can't for the life of me understand why we haven't aided the dissidents.

I don't generally voice in on these maybe threads, but this time I will...
It is unfortunate, that America has to give in on this one and the Iranians know it. If the US flexes muscle with Iran, the entire arab nations will rise up. Hey? Where did we here this before??.... U-Oh...

As far as a land war goes geography is on Iran's side. Secondly, we cannot even handle Iraq and some want to add Iran. This seems foolish.

Virtually every contention of the author is immediately questionable. Iran is a problem, but less intractable than the author supposes.
The question is: Shall we (or the Israelis) neuter Iran's WMD program? If the answer is yes, let the bombers fly. If the answer is no, prepare to wait out the nuclear fuel cycle, and find out if the Iranians were serious about nuking Israel. If Israel is nuked, Tehran, Mecca, Medina, Damascus and Cairo ought to be flattened. Otherwise MAD prevails.
Them's the possible outcomes, IMHO.

Yet for this agreement to materialize, the parties involved may need to go beyond the nuclear issue to address the conditions that have led the Iranians to live in constant fear of the United States and Israel. Might it have something to do with, oh, I don't know, maybe THE TAKING OF AMERICAN HOSTAGES FOR 444 DAYS?
Oh, and let's not forget all the terrorism they've sponsored. It sucks when the chickens come home to roost, doesn't it?
