Police Chief Says Thousands Trapped in New Orleans Convention Center
AP ^ | 1-Sept-2005 | AP

Posted on 09/01/2005 2:49:12 PM PDT by Fitzcarraldo

The New Orleans police chief says 15-thousand people are trapped in the city's convention center. And he says some are being raped and beaten.

Chief Eddie Compass says displaced tourists are "walking in that direction and they are getting preyed upon."

Compass said he sent eight eleven-man teams into the convention center. But as soon as the first team arrived, he said, "they were beaten back within 30 feet of the entrance."

Earlier, the city's mayor issued a "desperate SOS" on behalf of the thousands who are stranded at the convention center.

He also gave the go-ahead for them to march across a bridge to a dry area of the city and look for whatever relief they could find.

Why would tourists still be there?

Didn't have flights out in time, and could'nt get rental cars?

Besides, the hotels were "safe" from the huricane, just that nobody thought the situation would be so bad afterward.

Caller into a talk show today said her sisteer was in a hotel there, and had forced them to leave and go to the superdome. If that place is as bad as it appears, I think the hotel will be in for one hell of a lawsuit for forcing their removal.

This makes sense from a criminal poit of view. It's open season on trapped tourists who don't have connections to or
know people in the area.

"My question is this, has the crime rate risen in NO the
past few days or is this how it is on a typical day
there and we just do not hear about it on the National
News?"

Excellent question! I believe the true crime situation
in most of out cities is not reported. It's deliberately
censored by the liberal news outlets and local governments.

>>Yes, the tourists are getting a real "New Orleans experience" they never expected.<<

They are like the tourist that goes to NYC and actually gets mugged. It happens.

Us southerners are not at all surprised by this behavior.

I am a US Southerner and I am very surprised and disgusted by this behavior.

I suppose this is what the kind of lifestyle in New Orleans breeds. It is not a good reflection upon the city. I pray the the police gets the situation under control and take out these thugs.

Wonder if any Navy SEALS are there? We are sending in Special Forces to aid with hurricane/flood relief. Unreal.

"The type of battle reports we are getting is not typical of criminals."

I disagree. During the L.A. Rodney King riots there were a lot of spectacular gun battles between the police and street gangs. This is genuinely normal criminal behavior.

How can 15,000 people who are trapped in the Convention Center be given the go-ahead to march across a bridge to another area of the city? Are they trapped or not?

The last thread on this got pulled. Reason: pulled.

Logic reminds me of a George Carlin skit back in the 1970s when he did a parody on the weatherman.

Forecast: Tonight, gradually becoming more dark until morning when it will become gradually lighter.

I don't think there'll be any lawsuits. They're evacuating the entire city; if she gets out before cholera, typhus and who knows what else strike, she'll be a lucky lady.

"...what part of MANDATORY EVACUATION didn't they understand?"

Many of these could not leave.

The reason?
Simple: these are the folks who rely on MASS TRANSIT.

I'm surprised nobody else has put two and two together here:
There are thousands who could not leave because mass transit doesn't work in an emergency!
