Police Chief Says Thousands Trapped in New Orleans Convention Center

The New Orleans police chief says 15-thousand people are trapped in the city's convention center. And he says some are being raped and beaten.

Chief Eddie Compass says displaced tourists are "walking in that direction and they are getting preyed upon."

Compass said he sent eight eleven-man teams into the convention center. But as soon as the first team arrived, he said, "they were beaten back within 30 feet of the entrance."

Earlier, the city's mayor issued a "desperate SOS" on behalf of the thousands who are stranded at the convention center.

He also gave the go-ahead for them to march across a bridge to a dry area of the city and look for whatever relief they could find.

My take is that this is a perfect opportunity to have in-country terrorists strike elsewhere in northern US with bio or nuke weapons, while most of our assets are deployed to calm the NO and Gulf Coast situation!

FEMA Director Mike Brown said on CNN today that the request from the state of Louisiana for assistance at the New Orleans convetion center came this afternoon. He said they are responding and that trucks are on the way.

It's like I speculated elsewhere: this situation has jurisdiction pride and snafus written all over it.

Which levees, the river or the canal levees? The river levees were in good order. The canal levees were a joke and nothing could improve them. Maintenance of the levees is the responsibility of the Army Corps of Engineers and they work primarily with Congress for funding.

I haven't been impressed with Bush's public response either. As always, he hasn't given enough face time and ends up looking removed. But you can hardly blame him for what has happened. A sea-coast city 7 feet below sea level. It's not LIKE trying to keep the ocean out, it IS trying to keep the ocean out.

This FEMA Director is on MSNBC right now lying through his teeth. There's a disconnect between him saying "the food and water are being distributed right now" and live cameras showing nothing of the sort.

Where would they get this water and food from? The closest airport that is open is 100 miles away.That roundtrip is en efficient use of a chopper carrying one pallet of water.
It takes time to stage supplies close to the area.They can't just say it ought to be that way and make it happen.Meanwhile people are drowning while the helicopters are being wasted the way yuou would use them.Leave the thinking to the Pros and more lives will be saved.

True, ALL I can say to you all folks, MY HEART BREAKS for the children and the elderly. I am outrageously angered at the freakin looters and those causing Chaos! Let me make it perfectly clear, I am in NO way giving those criminals a pass. I don't really know why they didn't evacuate when they were told, but instead of kicking them in the teeth, I'll do my best to help them. I have donated to the Salvation Army, Operation Blessing and I will continue to pray for a quick recovery of those states that have been literally devastated to the ground and for our Country and our President. Especially our president he needs all the wisdom in the world right now! :(
