Police Chief Says Thousands Trapped in New Orleans Convention Center
AP ^ | 1-Sept-2005 | AP

Posted on 09/01/2005 2:49:12 PM PDT by Fitzcarraldo

The New Orleans police chief says 15-thousand people are trapped in the city's convention center. And he says some are being raped and beaten.

Chief Eddie Compass says displaced tourists are "walking in that direction and they are getting preyed upon."

Compass said he sent eight eleven-man teams into the convention center. But as soon as the first team arrived, he said, "they were beaten back within 30 feet of the entrance."

Earlier, the city's mayor issued a "desperate SOS" on behalf of the thousands who are stranded at the convention center.

He also gave the go-ahead for them to march across a bridge to a dry area of the city and look for whatever relief they could find.

Actually...let me rephrase.

After reading replies of others, it's become agreed that you've made an ass of yourself with the comment about Iraq, and the lack of military in NOLA on account of it.

I think you said something really stupid there. But more than this, what you said is possibly a reflection of your own sense of helplessness on account of what's going on down at the gulf coast.

My wife has a saying/question. It is "What comes out when you're squeezed? Is it good or bad? " So you may not be a troll, but some serious leftist drivel came out of you when "squeezed".

The Democrats have created a cradle to grave constituency largely incapable of self-resilience and self-reliance.

He was just informed, this afternoon, that there were 3000 people in the Convention Center. FEMA is likely getting the supplies there right now.

I've been watching these people at the convention center on TV for two days, I find it hard to believe no one knew they were there.

That said... I'd rather be glad if help is ~really~ coming than curse it for being late. But these people, in the absence of any aid or news, are quickly coming apart.

" I guess you're never seen a riot in Southern California or South Florida."

No, but I am getting a real education watching New Orleans die.

It must be nice to be as smart as you. The only person on FR to have good judgment and common sense. I am awed!

It probably is - as I say, this was from a post (probably earlier on this thread) and I have no idea of its authenticity. Still, I hope it's true.

I don't know why you guys think we don't have enough troops because of Iraq. We only have 138,000 in Iraq. There are more than enough National Guard units that can be activated and sent to New Orleans to impose order:

"Pentagon spokesman Lawrence Di Rita said the states have adequate National Guard units to handle the hurricane needs, with at least 60 percent of the guard available in each state. He said about 6,500 National Guard troops were available in Louisiana, about 7,000 troops in Mississippi, nearly 10,000 in Alabama and about 8,200 in Florida."

The refugees can be settled in military bases for few months while they decide what to do with the city. This is a good opportunity to abandon the flooded areas completely and resettle the residents to higher ground. You can fix the dykes today, but what are you going to do when it breaks again? We're better off leaving it as a lake.

Please. The worst of this is almost all manmade. It is awful what happened, but the sons and brothers of the people in that city have worsened the hardships of everyone by choosing to discount shop instead of assist the rescue worlers.

When citizens are disarmed and order breaks down, the wicked will prey on the helpless.

because the ones who have been in or around the Superdome have said people are getting food and water.

These people ARE NOT AT THE SUPERDOME. They are at the CONVENTION CENTER. This thread has nothing to do with the superdome. Fog of New Orleans.

Not too much CNN. In fact I've been watching the local channels in LA and MS. The help is not there.

You contonue to make a mundane point because you don't know where they cold get the supplies to chopper in.

What isn't obvious to someone who hasn't worked with broken levees ( as I assume for you) that a failed attempt to block them would likely widen the breach dramatically.

The reason the Army Corps of Engineers didn't drop bags into the breach is quite clear to those of us who have. It would have done serious damage to the remaining levee and perhaps added 200 feet to the breach. Moving water is extremely difficult to plug up. It tends to go over and around anything you put in its way, digging as it goes.

The Army Corps of Engineers are quite expert. If they didn't do it because they didn't think it would work, it probably wouldn't have worked. They are the best at this type of operation.

It turned out it was pulled because it was unsourced, other than giving a radio stations call letters.

But the official reason it was pulled was simply: "pulled"
