No one knew much about him. He was a black man with close-cropped hair who looked to be in his 40s. He had a high school class ring. He had been at the convention center for four days, no different from thousands of others.
Friday night, he lost it. While others tried to sleep on the sweltering sidewalk around him, he began to mumble to himself, kicking aside piles of trash. He yelled something about his missing wife. Just before midnight, a police car screamed down Convention Center Drive, and from there, the stories diverge.
Some said he just ended it ran out in front of the car. Some said he was trying to flag it down for help when it clipped him. Some said he had a gun and was either shot or run over.
In some fashion, he died in the street, his blood draining toward the curb and congealing under a pile of crushed orange juice cartons and dirty diapers. He was still there Saturday afternoon, and chances are he is still there today.
"Right where he fell. Like roadkill," said Larry Martin, 35, another evacuee.

No rumors allowed.
That reporter found juicier stories than Geraldo this morning. We watched him interview a physician, asked her, "So what's the WORST thing you've seen?" Sounded like he wanted a story, the more gruesome the better. She disappointed, however, but just looking at him with a how-stupid-is-this look and replied, "Ah... death?"
What a pretentious writer.
Nagin said it might be impossible to find enough room to bury the bodies; they might all be cremated.
If the victims died from drowning, starvation, etc and cannot be identified, I may agree with the mayor.
If it is people who have been shot and killed (not looters) than I would like to know as close an estimate as possible.
I don't want them hiding the real truth for the sake of protecting the City/mayor/Gov.
You, bud.
"I don't want them hiding the real truth for the sake of protecting the City/mayor/Gov."
My thoughts as well. Cremating the bodies would be a great way to cover up the total costs in human terms at least.
What, is this your 'clubhouse,' you set the rules? How is this anymore a 'rumor' than any other news report?
Starvation? You think it is possible for a healthy person to starve to death in 4 or 5 days?
He probably meant 'dehydration,' in which case it can happen in three days.
What a drastic difference with the way NY handled the aftermath of 9/11, the way they showed respect for the dead.
I think the real total will be covered up (no pun intended)
I guess. I have heard so many idiot reporters and racial pimps excusing looters as starving when in fact the might have been hungry, but they were a month or two from starving that I am just tired of it.
Yeah what a question to ask a med worker. sometimes you just have know words.
Thank you. My point exactly. People with their throats cut, shot in the face, burned. These are the realities of the chaos which occured that will be swept into the river to never be seen again.
With some of the reports you get from friends, news, etc a small scale race war occured and only the majority of that city knew it and declared it.
I saw a Geraldo rerun last week does that count?
Fortunately, this is the USA. People will be asking after their relatives and friends. Not much chance for a cover-up/
Starvation?
Not a healthy person. I agree.
Those who are old and weak, weak minded, panic stricken, etc., yes.
Some after day 1 sounded as though they wanted to give up.
Kind of sad isn't it.
