Will mayor bite on PETA’s veggie challenge?
The Boston Herald ^ | 09/09/2005 | Kevin Rothstein

The animal-loving PETA folks are setting their sights on Mayor Thomas M. Menino's fluctuating waistline, inviting him to see how much weight he can lose by chowing down strictly on vegetarian food.

"He's a good mayor and a good man, but he could stand to lose some weight and set a good example for the people of Boston,'' said Joe Haptas, special projects head of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The militant animal rights group says as part of its GoVeg.com Lifestyle Challenge, it's prepared to buy two vegeterian meals a day for the mayor to mangia. For every pound lost, PETA threatens to donate $500 in veggie burgers to the Boston Public Schools.

The mayor hasn't responded to PETA's letter from last week. Reached at dinnertime last night, a mayoral spokesman served up a no comment on behalf of Hizzoner.

But publicity-happy PETA says its contest is a win-win, since it would trim the nosh-happy Menino and help whittle down the city's tubby high school teens as well.

"I don't know who would turn down two free meals a day and all the food we offered to the school system, because kids are fat anyway. The obesity rate is astonishing,'' PETA's Veronica Van Hof said.

A vegetarian diet might even help others avoid Crohn's Disease, the intestinal condition afflicting Menino, according to Haptas.

While PETA's veggie challenge may not amuse Boston's notoriously thin-skinned mayor, it pales in comparison to some of the Norfolk, Va.-based group's other stunts.

The group recently halted an ad campaign comparing animal exploitation to the human slave trade. Its ads include a billboard spoofing the beef industry slogan (``Beef, it's what's rotting in your colon'') and a picture of a crying infant sporting a milk mustache above the slogan ``Got Sick Kids?''

"I don't know who would turn down two free meals a day...

Me. And I like veggies. I just don't like you.

Picked up some sort of vegetarian rag in the doctor's office the other day. The preachy, smug, holier then thou tone was so offensive that I promptly put it down with out searching out any recipes.

If you think that eating some kinds of food makes you virtuous then you need to have your mental health evaluated.

PETA does not love animals, they kill them.

The Mayor is a fool if he supports this terrorist front organization.

What is the origin of the word "vegetarian"?

It is an old Indian word that means "poor hunter".

That's no joke.I did Atkins a few years ago and went from 225 to 197 in about four months with surprisingly little mental (or physical) anguish.

Ahhhhh, nothing beats a good thick steak coming off a grill hot, sizzling and plopped down next to a loaded baked potato. A little salt and some pepper, yum yum.

I love walking through my neighborhood around dinner time in the summer. The smells drifting on the wind make me drool. They are cooking chicken, oh, sniff, over there are hamburgers.

I love to watch the battles between AIDS "activists" and
animal rights "activists".To their credit,at least the AIDS
crowd understands that 99.9% of the progress that man
has made in medical research has had animal research
at its core.

Or cow? What do they feed cattle to fatten them? I believe I heard it's grain.

Some of those veggie burgers can be pretty tasty, folks! And, a veggie diet is good for you. I like mine with steak.
