NRA Statement on New Orleans Gun Confiscations
NRA ^ | September 12, 2005 | NRA

Posted on 09/12/2005 5:13:54 PM PDT by Mulder

National Rifle Association leader Wayne LaPierre slammed New Orleans authorities Monday for seizing legal firearms from lawful residents.

"What we’ve seen in Louisiana - the breakdown of law and order in the aftermath of disaster - is exactly the kind of situation where the Second Amendment was intended to allow citizens to protect themselves, " LaPierre said.

"When law enforcement isn’t available, Americans turn to the one right that protects all the others - the right to keep and bear arms," LaPierre said. "This attempt to repeal the Second Amendment should be condemned."

The New York Times reported last Thursday that no civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to have guns, quoting the superintendent of police that "only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons."

A Louisiana state statute allows the chief law enforcement officer to "regulate possession" of firearms during declared emergencies. "But regulate doesn’t mean confiscate," said Chris W. Cox, the NRA’s chief lobbyist.

"Authorities are using that statute to do what the looters and criminals could not: disarm the law-abiding citizens of New Orleans trying to protect their homes and families," Cox said.

"The NRA will not stand idly by while guns are confiscated from law-abiding people who’re trying to defend themselves," he said.

"We’re exploring every legal option available to protect the rights of lawful people in New Orleans," Cox said, "and we’re taking steps to overturn such laws in every state where they exist."

"Local authorities in New Orleans are turning nature’s assault on human life into man’s assault on human rights," LaPierre said. "Four million NRA members intend to stop this unconstitutional power grab."

If you're involved in a natural disaster you have to take the initiative to protect the right to defend your property. If that means hiding your weapons from the authorities to keep them then so be it.

Gonna be mighty hard to shoot looters, rapists, etc, with guns hidden well enough that the Government agents can't find them.

Good point. Hopefully you'll be able to keep one handy to keep the looters at bay. It's sad we're even having this conversation. The Feds have no damn business confiscating weapons from those trying to protect their lives and property.

I have been a member of the NRA for years. I live in Maryland where we have some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation. I have seen VERY little the NRA has done to help us here. I do sometimes wonder what they really do!

Let me ask you---when was the last time you attended a local NRA Members' Council meeting? Ever? The NRA is a grassroots orginazation. That means opposing local gun grabbers is something done by local members councils--that means you! The national organization can only do so much. They have their hands full working on the national level and selected state battles. Local councils meet every month. If you haven't joined yours, do it now.

"no civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to have guns, quoting the superintendent of police that "only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons."

I'd feel better about seeing any of my neighbors walking down the street with a gun in a time of disaster and disorder than see some armed New Orleans cops coming into my neighborhood looking for stuff that they couldn't find on their Walmart looting spree. There's a lot of stuff that Walmart just doesn't carry.

"Can't answer that one except to say your guns will be where you left them when you get back."

You're kidding right?
The looters will just pass them by 'cause you're coming back to get them? WTF?

It took them long enough. I'm a little bummed that I didn't get an email back clarifying their initial wishy-washy response to my letter asking them why they weren't standing with GOA and SAS. I'll keep that in mind when the next 20 or 30 fundraising letters arrive.

hophead,
maryland can't be any worse than nyc ...they (nrA) don't care about our rights, even our "right to privacy" as each firearm also goes on the list to your local police pct.,so they know exactly what you own and where you live, prints on file etc.
if they do not respond more aggressively,i'm not renewing my membership.

The NRA is pretty powerful and active. You should get Sirius and listen to NRA news. They are very busy and fighting on many fronts. I upgraded to life member this year because of the fight that is brewing at the UN. The NRA is our only hope, well, the NRA and a whole lot of guns and ammo.

Only the "State" needs guns. There are the "regulated militia" which our Constitution guarantees.

With New Orleans police quitting the job and even assisting in the looting we saw a classic example of how in modern present times, in our cultured and civilized society, it is barbaric, primitive, and out right ignorant to believe that a "citizen" has the right and possible necessity to protect themselves.

Ban all guns immediately! Take them away from those bad evil Christian law abiding citizens! Yes, Hollywood and the MSM has taught me that white people need to be watched. That Christians are a sect that is radical. That Islam is the “religion of peace.”

LA/NO has shown us that we no longer need guns in the hands of people. It has demonstrated that we need more federal laws, regulations, policies and another agency to regulate and prepare for such disasters. We need to immediately create another governmental agency!

Also, it has become obvious that Bush is at fault for the delay in mobilizing the National Guard (Not the governor), and delay in evacuation of New Orleans (Not the mayor or governor), blocking delivery (Red cross) of relief supplies at the super-dome (mayor), NO mayor not knowing what assets he had available where and when (Bush should have flown in and personally told him that those busses were parked 1.2 miles from the dome), the NO police hiring corrupt personnel who in part quit there job when disaster strikes (Not the governor, mayor or chief of Police’s fault). It is obvious that these factors were the result of racist policies and a lack of concern by the “white men” in charge at the white house (never mind Collin, Condi, Rodriguez…… Those people are not minorities according to Jesse’s definition.). In fact, it’s a scandal that the Bush administration has given the clean up to Halliburton and that Bush is not impeached, seeing how he is personally responsible for the rise in oil prices. Did I miss something? What mindless “It’s Bush’s fault”, and other cliché did I leave out?

What did I learn from Katrina? All you need to do if you’re ignorant is to yell loud obscenities into a TV camera and shazzam- You’re right, if you’re black and play the race card. Obama and Jesse said so.

LA has done itself a great service in DIScrediting and branding the “We’re backwards” label onto the state.

---This is the material from which bad disaster films were made in the 70s!!!!! We have huge ants, giant tomatoes (attack of the killer tomatoes), and an earthquake. We even have a tsunami already that flips a ship (Poseidon adventure). I guess the one plus point about this mishap is that now we can make a hurricane film- staring Nagin, the governor of LA and chief of police. Truth is stranger than fiction.

I’m sure in Michael Moore’s “documentary”, which will win all European prizes for best documentary, it will show us the real culprit - George W. Bush! BTW, I heard that bottom feeding ambulance chaser (Who cares so much about the children of Columbine, US soldiers etc) was already down there? Must be lots of FREE footage of misery? With a little coercing/guerilla journalism I’m sure he’ll get some upset people to say some real wild things. Good for him. What a great American he is.

The second thing I learned: A liberal will create his own "version" of the truth. An expression the MSM taught us when they tried to defend Kerry in the presidential elections. Who can’t forget the MSM trying to make the Swift Vet issue “relative” and “subjective and open to interpretation”. Facts no longer lead to conclusions. It’s all just words with no meaning anymore for the MSM.

Do you buy hunting licenses? If so, you have already made a statement that you either own a gun or have access to one.
