NRA Statement on New Orleans Gun Confiscations
NRA ^ | September 12, 2005 | NRA

Posted on 09/12/2005 5:13:54 PM PDT by Mulder

National Rifle Association leader Wayne LaPierre slammed New Orleans authorities Monday for seizing legal firearms from lawful residents.

"What we’ve seen in Louisiana - the breakdown of law and order in the aftermath of disaster - is exactly the kind of situation where the Second Amendment was intended to allow citizens to protect themselves, " LaPierre said.

"When law enforcement isn’t available, Americans turn to the one right that protects all the others - the right to keep and bear arms," LaPierre said. "This attempt to repeal the Second Amendment should be condemned."

The New York Times reported last Thursday that no civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to have guns, quoting the superintendent of police that "only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons."

A Louisiana state statute allows the chief law enforcement officer to "regulate possession" of firearms during declared emergencies. "But regulate doesn’t mean confiscate," said Chris W. Cox, the NRA’s chief lobbyist.

"Authorities are using that statute to do what the looters and criminals could not: disarm the law-abiding citizens of New Orleans trying to protect their homes and families," Cox said.

"The NRA will not stand idly by while guns are confiscated from law-abiding people who’re trying to defend themselves," he said.

"We’re exploring every legal option available to protect the rights of lawful people in New Orleans," Cox said, "and we’re taking steps to overturn such laws in every state where they exist."

"Local authorities in New Orleans are turning nature’s assault on human life into man’s assault on human rights," LaPierre said. "Four million NRA members intend to stop this unconstitutional power grab."

Idiots!

They are not idiots. "Idiots" implies that they don't understand what they're doing. They understand EXACTLY what they're doing, and have had wet dreams over doing it for years - totally disarming the populace. A totally disarmed populace poses no threat to the armed thugs who enforce tyranny.

Yeah, the lesson is that the military and police WILL follow orders to confiscate guns.

Nothing new here. I've never heard of a cop refusing to confiscate anything. (Under the despicable David Dinkins, NYC cops enthusiastically confiscated lawfully registered semiautos in '92 and arrested their owners) Civil libertarians generally speaking don't seek a career in police work. It more appeals to those who like to enforce laws and who mindlessly "follow orders"

Only the "State" needs guns. There are the "regulated militia" which our Constitution guarantees. ...

You're obviously being sarcastic, but 99% of government bureaucrats, the JBTs, black democratic voters, and the msm fervently believe what you said as the literal truth.

Does anyone think that a single Ray Nagin or Mary Landreau voter will vote Republican next election?

Now how did Sean Penn get away with carrying a shotgun around New Orleans? He has served time in prison and also was jailed overseas.

He never said anything about the Kelo decision, he probably won't say anything about this either. I guess he's busy making sure clinton is comfy flying around with his dad begging for more money.

I couldn't agree more! Too little, too late! I have yet to hear back from my emails to them with anything of substance. I'm afraid the NRA has become a self-perpetuating money-machine with little interest in really taking on these problems.

Defense doesn't win ballgames.

If those who give the orders begin to drop, the orders will stop being given.

begin to drop

From the Mikado

"I've got a little list — I've got a little list
Of society offenders who might well be underground,
And who never would be missed — who never would be missed!

There's the pestilential nuisances who write for autographs... "

I could add my own verses
Greedy lazy whiners
Black Democratic mayors of New Orleans
Police chiefs who order weapons confiscations
Jbts who carry out those confiscations

therefore, I will keep my guns and fight to the death with anyone trying to take them......

If you were in NO..and the cops came to get your guns...would you really have had a shootout to the death with them? Honestly...would you have?

When the police are prohibited from protecting the citizens

I contend the police are incapable of protecting life and property. I contend that police 95% of the time, arrive after the crime has been committed. Other than acting as a general deterent at large, police are incapable of protecting everyone all of the time.

It is the moral obligation of each and every soul to protect himself, his family and his property...and the government can go to hell if they think they handle the job, let alone carry out that mission.

In recognition that the police of NO were directly involved in the mayhem......the looting and perhaps worse...I would not hesitate to shoot if my home and family were being invaded and threatened.

It is a well known fact that "authorized personnel" have mudered innocent citizens in otherwise harmless situations....recall Mrs Weaver, shot dead while holding an infant because some moron at the top decided to fake a public threat by that family which was totally untrue...Mrs Weaver's 14 year old son was gunned down too as well as the family dog which in turn was cut in half by these ghouls with auto weapon fire....Yes, Mr Weaver received money from the government for the horror they unleashed but his wife and child are DEAD!!!

Recall the children at Waco first gassed and then burned to death...I will never forget the tank pushing through the wall of the main building in real time on TV....

The answer to your question in these circumstances is : YES.

I've thought long and hard about what I would do if I were in that situation. I have a small problem with all of the examples you gave in that last post. American citizens were shot and killed and nothing was done about it. Not a damn thing. If you stood up and had been shot and killed, you would have been just a 5 second blurb, if that, in the MSM. I think if my neighbors and I was standing up for our 2nd Amendment rights...then things would come out differently....if you understand my meaning.

"Gun Owners of America and Jews for the Preservation of Firearm Ownership, also." Yes they are in there to and it was not my intention to leave them out. I was wound up and not thinking about the whole picture.

The cops need to protect themselves as they loot the Wal-Mart.

I read on another thread, they revoked the gun confiscation in LA. Could have been misinformation.

I'm furious about the authorities forgoing the constitution and confiscating the protection of law-abiding Americans.

I have been asking NRA members to put the initials in their tagline. That way we know who's really putting their money where their typing is. It's also inspired by Ted Nugent who believes as I do that every gun owner has to support their Rights and join.

I really don't care which group anyone belongs to as long as we all work together against that common enemy.

It's sort of difficult to believe you are a member. If you are, you should be able to read the American Rifleman or First Freedom so you would know what they do.

Either that or someone is doing your typing for you.
