DELTA AIR LINES was on the brink of filing for bankruptcy protection last night as an exodus of pilots demanding to cash-in their retirement accounts for a lump sum payment put further strain on the carrier’s finances.

More than 360 pilots have retired from Delta in the past two months, The Times has learnt, with each entitled to as much as 50 per cent of their defined benefit pension as a lump sum. Almost 650 pilots have retired this year, with a further 500 or 600 expected to quit in the next three months.
