---"I also happen to live in Seattle. We're doomed!"----

If you are in your wood-frame house when the "Big One" hits you should be able to ride it out. Highrises, bridges, roads, water, eletric, sewer, etc. will be severely damaged. As N.O. shows, have PLENTY of provisions (3 - 4 weeks in my case) as it may be awhile before help arrives.

Downtown Seattle will be especially difficult as most access is by bridge.

Someday the "Big One" will happen. It might be later today - it might be 400 years from now. On geologic field trips in the area (such as Bainbridge Island) you can see 20-foot tall fault scarps. One side of Seattle moving 20 feet all at once and the other side staying still could sure ruin your day!

And when the "Big One" hits it won't impact just Seattle, But everything from Vancouver, Canada on down to Portland. It'll make Katrina look small in comparison.

Sorry if I brought too serious of a note to this. Time to go watch the dog for awhile!

I also suggest plastic plates and cups, since it will save you from having to replace the china.

Not to worry. I have it from a psychic that Seattle will not be destroyed until the Mariners win the World Series.

The geological record on the West Coast has shown that megathrust earthquakes occur roughly once every 500 years. The last one struck on Jan. 26, 1700, which leaves a window of possibility 200 years wide.

Yeah, I know. Like I said, when the Mariners win the World Series...

The fault of Bush?

Reminds me of the movie "In and Out" where everyone says "I'm gay."

At work lately, the conservatives are beating the liberals to it now. No matter what happens, (printer out of paper, rain, bad traffic, etc) one of us says "It's Bush's fault", to waves of laughter, removing that pathetic lib-scuse from the playbook.

"We know there will be another megathrust earthquake, but we don't know when,"
"Megathrust"

I'd almost be willing to start a porn company just to have that on my stationary.

Thanks for the laugh! LOL!

Sorry!

Well - the New Madrid fault in Missouri(?) let go with a huge one in the 1800's(?). Knocked over Chimneys in Boston! When that one goes again it will disrupt many/all of the petroleum pipelines that feed the NE from the west and south. Lots of bridges across the Mississippi and points in between will be impacted too so commerce will be disrupted.

I'm of the opinion that bad stuff can happen anyway so be prepared the best you can with the basics and whatever fits your local needs.

And if you're near the coast when/if that rock mass goes into the ocean in the Azores(?) I hope you live inland. I forget what the models show the wave will be like - 400' to 500' tall as I recall? They have evidence of being this tall hitting Honolulu when the island across the way had a massive rock slide.

Thanks for the information. I live 45 miles west of the NJ coast, but my daughter will start building a million dollar+ house in the next few months on the coast. It's beautiful there, and I've spent many lovely summers on the beach with her and my grandson. When I've mentioned the possibility of a hurricane/tsunami, she says, "That's the chance you take."

Keeping my fingers crossed and extra bedrooms ready!
