New Orleans mayor suspends reopening of the city because of Rita

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Under pressure from President Bush and other top federal officials, the mayor Monday suspended the reopening of large portions of the city over the next few days because of the risk of a new round of flooding from a tropical storm.

"I am concerned about this hurricane getting in the gulf. ... If we are off, I'd rather err on the side of conservatism to make sure we have everyone out," Mayor Ray Nagin said.

The announcement came after repeated warnings from top federal officials — and the president himself — that the city was unsafe. The mayor reversed course even as residents began trickling back to the first neighborhood opened as part of Nagin's plan, the scarcely damaged Algiers section.

The mayor said he had wanted to reopen some of the city's signature neighborhoods over the coming week in order to reassure the people of New Orleans that "there was a city to come back to." He said he had strategically selected ZIP codes that had suffered little or no flooding.

But "now we have conditions that have changed. We have another hurricane that is approaching us," he said. He warned that the city's pumping system was not yet running at full capacity and that its levee system was still in a "very weak position."

...Before reversing course Monday, a clearly agitated Nagin snapped that Allen had apparently made himself "the new crowned federal mayor of New Orleans."

Can you believe this guy has an MBA?

Having been one to get my college degree in more recent years, yes I can.

Why is he so he..bent on getting the people back in that filth?

Nagin needs his voters back!! The longer people stay away from NO, the greater the number of people who will find some reason not to come back.

The intelligent people who move back will NOT be voting for him, because they never did.

This tragedy has turned Louisiana into a RED state, and Texas into a BLUE state.

EASY! He doesn't want the people to set down roots and never return. They are his voting base!

Of course, with his sunken busses, they'll likely only be able to vote once.

The city has NO MONEY!!!!

The man wants people back in NOLA so he can collect revenue, afford to cut himself a paycheck and make his house payment in Dallas.

You suspend it because of hurricane season, you moron, not just one storm.

At least give the re-construction, re-infrastructuring efforts a chance before you bring your serfs back to ground zero.

Ok, one last time, just for kicks!

1. Only a moron, an intellectual gnat would live in a city below sea level on the Gulf of Mexico. This level of stupidity is equal to the morons who live on the San Andreas fault, or who own a mobile home in a trailer park in Oklahoma.

They are morons since they know with absolute certainty that annually hurricanes develop off the east coast of the United States of America, and periodically they make landfall in places like New Orleans. Additionally, these mental midgets live there even though they know with absolute certainty that the next hurricane may be the worst to ever hit them, thereby bringing total devastation, death, destruction, and disease.

But they don't care. Their all too busy smoking crack, having illegitimate kids, collecting welfare checks and prepping for the moral degradation of Mardi Gras.

Since these morons chose to live there, let them help themselves out of the mess they've found themselves in.

2. The city of NO is a CommuDem plantation, run by the liberals, for the liberals, with your money. The politicians are corrupt, the police are corrupt, and when you throw in the genetic mutant inbreeding factor, the stupidity level goes right off the charts!

3. Had President Bush not waged a war against Muslim terrorists (The Religion of Peace) he probably would have gone down in history as one of the biggest domestic spenders of all time. Now, by promising $400,000 to every pathetic miscreant in this fetid swamp, he has assured himself of the title. This is spending like the CommuDems have only dreamed of! God knows it makes "Midnight Basketball" look like a Sesame Street program!

4. Bush has now set a precedent of unlimited spending which will rise up to bite you and me in the ass every time some snot-nose hurricane looter whines about racial injustice. Well my wallet is empty so Shaneeka and Twaykame will have to just loot another liquor store!

5. What must it be like to know a week in advance that a powerful hurricane is likely to hit your coastal sewer, and yet you do NOTHING! Or how about knowing several days in advance that you are the target, but darn, you've got that Mardi Gras float committee meeting, and you're Cadillacs Escalade is in the shop for new mag wheels and windshield tinting. There's just no decent way to get out.

Or how about as you watch your family drown. Hey, they could've left on their own you say! And just imagine how much better it makes you feel when you learn from Calypso Louie that the levee was actually blown-up by whitees! Why some say Bush himself pushed the detonator from the White House!

So lets blow every stinking cent we have on the worthless pile of shacks that these a-holes willingly built and lived in, and refused to leave. Sure, the Mayor who couldn't pass a third grade math test screwed up, but, hey, he's a brother. Can't blame a brother!

So here's hoping these morons enjoy their new $400,000 homes, no taxes for 2005, and when that Escalade gets back on the street, they'll be tossing necklaces out the window, drinkin' Hurricanes, and sizing up that new gun shop down the street for when the next hurricane hits!

"He said he had strategically selected ZIP codes that had suffered little or no flooding."

But, but, but ... New Orleans was devastated! Completely flooded. I read that in newspapers -- saw it on TV. Just 2 weeks ago I read that Nagin said: "... thousands of people that have died and thousands more that are dying every day ..."

I just can't figure this out. Can anyone explain it to me? It doesn't seem to add up.

Can you believe this guy has an MBA?

Actually, I can't believe how insignificant an achievement obtaining an MBA has become. His getting one just proves the point. Most everyone I know these days that has an MBA is an absolute idiot.

There is one exception to that observation that I can think of right now. He is a guy who I know was an engineer, got his MBA and moved up, became disillusioned, and became an engineer again. He was the only one that I've seen who actually had the brains and know how and couldn't put up with the upper level corporate BS so he went back to being a "worker bee" so to speak.

Nagin says, "There is only one mayor of New Orleans and I'm it."

I see the infighting will just continue..Feds, state, local...

There is only one certainty..FEMA/Bush is to blame for everything that goes wrong...so they say.

Nagin didn't make this decision. If you look at him closely, you can see the strings.

IMO, he doesn't want his "brother's" to get too comfortable in another location and that there is another way of life outside the welfare state.

interpretation: "I've got to those voters back or I don't have a job"
