SAN ANTONIO - Army Pfc. Lynndie England will abandon her earlier courtroom strategy and fight charges that she was a key participant in prisoner abuse by guards at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison, her lawyer said. The 22-year-old reservist, made infamous by a series of graphic photos taken inside Abu Ghraib, goes on trial Tuesday at Fort Hood, Texas, on seven counts of mistreating prisoners.

She will be the last of a group of junior enlisted soldiers charged with Abu Ghraib abuses to have their cases resolved. Two have been convicted at trial, while six others made plea deals and received prison sentences of up to eight years. Three months after England's attempt at a plea agreement fell apart, her lead defense lawyer, Capt. Jonathan Crisp, said, There's not going to be a deal. Crisp said he plans to base much of his defense on England's history of mental health problems that date back to her childhood. He said he also will focus on the influence exerted over England by Pvt. Charles Graner, the reputed abuse ringleader. Graner, believed to have fathered England's young son while they were deployed, is serving a 10-year sentence after being convicted at trial in January.

I expect defense counsel will keep her on a short leash.

The defense counsel might let her wing it somewhat to try and get her an insanity defense.

Makes sense. It's only about sex, right? What's the big deal? It depends on what the meaning of "is" is.

She isnt really fighting the charges , she is just saying she was too stupid or incompetent to be responsible.

Thats a long way from fighting the charges.

I suspect the MSM will be only too happy to use this story to get Abu Ghraib front and center to hurt the President. And they have been emboldened by the damage they inflicted using Cindy Sheehan - they will focus like lasers on the victim status of Pfc England.

This whole thing has been so blown out of proportion that the charges should be dropoped, the others should be pardoned and Cindy Sheehan should be sent to finish her son's tour of duty.

she is just saying she was too stupid or incompetent to be responsible.

Amen to that. Memo to would-be criminals: Leave the camera at home.

Or, as a district magistrate told me many years ago, "If stupidity were against the law, you'd be in serious trouble".

This has been much ado about nothing. And what angers me is that my tax money has gone into this circus. This whole thing could have been solved behind closed doors.

No prisoner got his head chopped off.

Will the chief judge have the bailiffs issued with rolled-up newspapers?

Good for her. Nothing to be ashamed of. Want to put someone in jail? Her name is former "General" (how many battles has she been in?) Janice Karpinsky. She is solely responsible for the unprofessional behavior of the prison staff,
