Obama silent as black caucus opposes Roberts

WASHINGTON (AP) -- While the Congressional Black Caucus announced Tuesday that it opposes the confirmation of Supreme Court Chief Justice-nominee John Roberts, the Senate's lone black member, Sen. Barack Obama, remained undecided, Obama's spokesman said.

The Illinois Democrat will not take a position on President Bush's nominee until he has at least met privately with Roberts, spokesman Tommy Vietor said.

Roberts and Obama were scheduled to meet at the senator's Capitol Hill office Wednesday, just a couple of hours before Obama is to deliver the keynote address to the Congressional Black Caucus Weekend Kick-Off at the Washington Convention Center.

Even after they meet, Obama may not immediately take a position on Roberts because he may want more time to consider what the judge said, Vietor said.

The federal appeals judge and the senator have never met before, according to Obama's spokesman.

Obama is the only member of the black caucus who is actually eligible to cast a vote on Roberts' confirmation.

Black caucus member Rep. Danny Davis, D-Ill., said the leadership can announce a caucus position without having the support of every single member.

Davis opposes Roberts' confirmation.

Illinois' other senator, Dick Durbin, the Senate's second-ranking Democrat, has not taken a position on Roberts, according to his spokesman Joe Shoemaker.

Durbin, who is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, was expected to take a stance when the committee votes on Roberts' nomination Thursday. The committee held hearings earlier this month to question the 50-year-old judge and former Reagan administration attorney.

The kids getting some lower-tract uncomfort... he knows that this will go on his record.

I wouldn't put it past him that he isn't thinking about... President Oh-mama! in 2008... definitely, in 2012. First black... first socialist president.

We'll see soon enough(by the Roberts vote) just how smart & savvy he & Hillary are.

Obama is to deliver the keynote address to the Congressional Black Caucus Weekend Kick-Off at the Washington Convention Center.

Heaven forbid he should make his position known before the "keynote address".

Perhaps he's afraid that if he "decided" the wrong way, they'd give him the same reception they'd give President Bush.

So, does every senator get a private audience with every nominee? Didn't realize it worked that way.

One of my senators e-mailed a message letting us know that he met with Roberts, too. This senator is no longer on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Obama in the Barracks, trembling like a little girl "undecided" about Roberts. He will vote "nay" and then wait until Janice Rogers Brown cuts his cojones for good.
